Cat Lady No. 90...Nothing But Lambs

The great thing about living in Palm Springs is that March comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lamb...No lions in sight.

But there are plenty of tigers afoot...

Cat Lady Winifred has lost her heart to Cat Mom Queenie and her litter of tiny tiger kittens, all recently rescued from a local shelter.

When the time is right, the tabbies will be spayed or neutered and Winifred and Queenie will enjoy their little pride with pride.

Cat Lady No. 88...Time With Tascha

Artist, businesswoman and Cat Lady Tascha has a special place in her heart for all of her kitty loves, but one stands out: her dear, departed muse and business partner Bailey.

Many years ago, when Tascha was making and selling jewelry, Bailey struck a darling pose and inspired a little painting. The rest, as they say, is history. Hundreds of charming paintings and many years later, that special little painting found its way back to its rightful home. Read all about it here (you might want to have a hankie handy):

The First Painting I Sold On Ebay by Tascha

In the mean time, Tascha's current kitty loves Opie and Lily keep her inspired and amused and often get to star in video clips on Tascha's blog. Here's one called Bird Watching

Enjoy!

Cat Lady No. 87...Peaceable Kingdom

Is it possible for a vegetarian to live under the same roof as two fearsome carnivores and still co-exsist in peace and harmony ? Yes! Cat Lady Velma is living proof.

Velma has been a happy and healthy vegetarian for several years now and has come to an understanding with meat-eaters Reuben and Pastrami. She won't make them eat tofu as long as they don't make her eat dead mice. It's a beautiful relationship.

Velma has found a wealth of wonderful information and vegetarian recipes at this website:

Cat Lady No. 86...Tea Time with Tabbies

Illustration Friday
(theme:"poise" )

Like any good hostess, Cat Lady Millicent always remains the perfect picture of poise at tea time, even with the unexpected arrival of the Rapscallion Lads: Rufus, Rupert, and Randolf.

The tabby triplets, while not particularly fond of tea, do enjoy a spot of cream now and again. As for Millicent, her weakness lies in crumpets, especially those drenched in butter and honey.

If you would like to make home-made crumpets for your next tea party, here is a recipe: Home Made Crumpets.

This original ACEO watercolor illustration of Millicent and her Tabby Trio is currently up for sale in my Etsy shop: Tea Time with Tabbies

Cat Lady No. 83...Home Sweet Home

There are may reasons that there are so many Happy Faces around Cat Lady Berta's home.

One of them is Yoshie, a foundling who once wandered the streets of Claremont, but found a loving lap to purr on when Berta invited her in. In return for her kindness, Yoshie often grooms Roberta's hair. Yoshie means "good girl" in Japanese (Yoshi means good).

Another reason for the happy faces would have to be the fudge that is made in Berta's kitchen at holiday time, which she shares with neighbors and friends of neighbors in a very generous fashion.

Between Berta, Yoshie, and the best fudge in the world, 'tis a very Home Sweet Home, indeed!

Cat Lady No. 80...Scrabble Fiends, er, Friends

When Cat Lady Anne visited the West End Shelter in Ontario, California, how could she resist that dashing kitten with the beautiful eyes...one green and one blue! Named after a famous artist, Rufino Tamayo, Mr. Tamayo the Cat now spends his time as a studio artist model, mouse hunter, and scrabble fiend.

He has appeared in many paintings by Anne and spends much of his time in Anne's Art Work Studio where he continues to model, whether she is painting him or not.

Anne recently introduced Tamayo to the game of Scrabble, which he adores, and probably accounts for the vast improvement in his spelling skills.

Tamayo has his very own fan club called ODD-EYED CATS (that's what you are called when you have one green eye and one blue eye) and he hopes you will want to join!

Today is Anne's birthday and she is planning a special Open Studio, so Tamayo hopes to do a little early morning hunting and surprise her with breakfast in bed. What better way to start off a day with something that wiggles and makes you squeal?

Cat Lady No. 77...Home Remedies

Feline Fanatic Trillium and her Tuxedo Cat Trixie Two-Tone always enjoy a good sing-along whenever they play a Maria Callas aria on the phonograph.

But there is no singing tonight, because it is cold and flu season and Trillium is in the throes of a flu bug and can barely swallow, her throat is so sore.

She looked up some home remedies on her medical provider's website and she has tried each and every one:
  • get extra rest and sleep
  • drink hot tea or warm broth
  • breath warm, moist air from a humidifier, steamy shower, or sink filled with hot water
  • apply a moist warm towel to your face for 10 minutes several times a day
  • gargle with warm salt water twice a day
  • drink plenty of fluids and take vitamin C
Trixie Two-Tone is perplexed that they neglected to list the very best treatment of all: hug a purring cat for at least 10 minutes, 6 times per day, until all symptoms go away; then continue the treatment for at least another week. Or two. Or three...

Cat Lady No. 76...Lucky Day

Tabby Enthusiast Erin O'Malley rescued these handsome fellows, Donny and Danny Boy, from a local animal shelter when they were mere wee kittens.

Today, like every March 17th, they are celebrating the luck o' the Irish. However, Erin was recently shocked to learn that Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was not actually Irish at all.

He was a Roman-Britain who was born in Wales; he was kidnapped at 16 and taken to Ireland where he was held as a slave; he escaped 6 years later and returned home to his family, but then later returned to Ireland as a missionary, hoping to convert the Irish to Christianity.

Donny and Danny Boy don't care where he came from, they're just happy that there is a holiday in his honor, because they always seem to get an extra helping of tuna after Erin has enjoyed a few swigs of her traditional St. Patrick's Day Irish coffee...

Looking for the purrfect Irish Coffee Mug?

Cat Lady No. 75...Vintage Purls

Cat Lady Jillie and her helper, Spinner, are maniacs for yarn and knitting. It could be hereditary: Jillie's grandmother knitted 74 pairs of woolen socks during World War II to send to the troops overseas; and Spinner's great-grandmother was sitting on Jillie's lap on the day that Jillie learned how to knit when she was nine years old...

Jillie is currently working on a pair of socks from a vintage pattern that she found on a wonderful website called Vintage Purls.

As much fun as she's having, she can't imagine knitting another 73 pairs...

Just listed in my Etsy shop: This original hand-painted miniature watercolor painting of Jillie and Spinner! Take a look at: www.SusanFaye.etsy.com. It is in ACEO format and these very affordable mini watercolor paintings are adorable when framed and arranged in a grouping!

Cat Lady No. 74...The Ides of March

School Librarian (and Cat Lady) Eleanor is perusing a book about Ancient History with fellow bibliophile Cat Sophocles...

Today they have learned that the word "ides" was originally one of several common calendar terms used to mark monthly lunar events.

Later it came to mark the mid-point of a month. The Romans considered it to be an important day in their calendar. The word ides comes from the Latin meaning "half division". Every month had its ides: the 15th day of March, May, July or October, or the 13th day of any other month.

Happy Ides!

Cat Lady No. 73...Bink's Waltz

Neurosurgeon Jamie Jo rescued this handsome white cat from a local animal shelter and named him Galahad. She thinks that whoever abandoned him should have their head examined...!

Jamie Jo and Galahad recently joined the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of Waltzing with Cats (SPAWSCats). Jamie Jo has always been a fan of the King Of Ragtime, Scott Joplin (1868 - 1917), black pianist and composer. But she was surprised to learn that he also wrote incredibly beautiful and wistful waltzes. They include: Bethena Waltz, Harmony Club Waltz , Pleasant Moments, and Bink's waltz, which is
Gallahad's purrsonal favorite!

Cat Lady No. 72...Achoo!

The true measure of a Cat Lady's devotion lies in an unwavering willingness to endure sneezing, wheezing sniffling, itching and watery eyes in order to enjoy the company of her favorite pets.

Vicki B. is just such a feline fanatic. After her last kitty passed away, she thought perhaps she should give up her feline habit after years of enduring cat allergies.

But how could she resist a dashing gray charmer who hinted of Russian Blue ancestry and exhibited a talent for suddenly and effortlessly leaping straight up into the air? After springing him from the animal shelter, Vickie and her husband Brett named the fleet-of-foot-feline "Misha"after Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Willa also proved to be irresistible and was adopted from Independent Animal Rescue
(http://www.animalrescue.net/homepage), which recently won the "America's
Favorite Animal Shelter" contest (http://www.care2.com/animalsheltercontest/browse). Willa and Misha love their giant cat tree/playhouse in the kitchen, which was custom-built by Brett; they are also fans of tuna, a feather toy called "Da Bird", and a loving Cat Lady who has invested heavily in antihistamines and air filters!

Cat Lady No. 70...They're Grrrrreat!

Tabby Cat Fanatic Brianna enjoys a quiet moment with Tony Tiger, her pride and joy. Tony's pride and joy is his amazing fur coat which he will promptly begin disposing of on the first day of Spring. Over the ensuing months, Brianna will vacuum up enough fur to assemble several entire new cats if she chose to, and Tony will become noticeably slimmer in profile.

Tony does not know that Brianna named him after the mascot of her favorite childhood breakfast cereal. Back then, they were known as "Sugar Frosted Flakes". She doesn't remember exactly when they took the word "sugar" out of the name but she still always refers to them as "Sugar-Frosted-Flakes" as if it was all one word. Childhood habits sometimes die hard.

Tony's childhood habit of chasing his tail is what he can't leave behind. The sight is enough to make you laugh so hard that milk might come spilling out of your nose while you're eating your Sugar Frosted Flakes...

Cat Lady No. 69...The Bookmobile

Cat Lady Coretta and faithful companion Cyrano always look forward to the arrival of the Bookmobile each Thursday morning. Considering that the nearest library is 45 miles away, it's a wonderful service indeed to have books delivered to their tiny community.

The same song always comes to mind when Coretta begins anticipating the arrival of the Bookmobile. Here is how it goes:

O-ho the Wells Fargo Wagon is a-comin' down the street,
Oh please let it be for me!
O-ho the Wells Fargo Wagon is a-comin' down the street,
I wish, I wish I knew what it could be!

It's the song "Wells Fargo Wagon" from THE MUSIC MAN. Sometimes Coretta hums it and sometimes she sings it out loud to Cyrano's delight. And to Coretta's delight, she recently learned that there's a term for a song or melody that plays over and over in your mind: earworm. There are lots of other names too: sticky tune, cognitive itch, involuntary musical imagery.

Cyrano has an earworm too...Sometimes he just can't get the song "Three Blind Mice" out of his head, ususally just before suppertime...

Cat Lady No. 68...Garden Dreaming

It's time to start thinking about the vegetable garden and Cat Lady Adora is enjoying an quiet morning looking through seed catalogs with Cat Mom Bathsheba and her kitten Billy Boy!

Just yesterday Adora was very excited to find asparagus starts at the local garden nursery. Having never grown asparagus before, she went straight home, and with Billy Boy on her shoulder and Bathsheba on her lap, she sat at the computer and did some research.

She was surprised to learn that it takes 3 years for the plants to establish themselves, but once they do, they can last up to 12 to 15 years!

She discovered a wonderful gardening website called WATCH YOUR GARDEN GROW by the University of Illinois Extension; and they had lots of useful information about growing, storing and cooking asparagus:
GROW YOUR OWN ASPARAGUS

Today, Adora is focusing on ordering seeds for her herb garden, and is making sure that catnip is on the list, much to the delight of Bathsheba and Billy Boy.

Cat Lady No. 64...Great Aunty Mabel

Cat Lady Elena and her Persian Princess Pambeh enjoy tracing their genealogies... Elena recently learned that her Great-Auntie Mabel was a suffragist in the early 1900s.

In a letter that Mabel wrote in 1908, she tells about the day that year when she joined 15,000 women who marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

The first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on February 28th, 1909. Now, 100 years later, Elena and Princess Pambeh will observe International Women's Day on March 8. It is a day of global celebration for women's advancement. Thousands of events occur each year to honor the women of the past, to celebrate the women of today, and to prepare for the daughters of tomorrow.

Princess Pambeh is enthusiastic, but continues to actively campaign for the day when cats too will have the right to vote...

Cat Lady No. 63...Don't be Perturbed

Cat Purrson Yolanda has a weakness for salty snacks which might explain why her orange tabby answers to the name Dorito.

She also has a weakness for word games, which might explain her excitement at discovering a new word that she did not know about until today:
perturbation
(noun)
1. the act of perturbing.
2. the state of being perturbed.
3. mental disquiet, disturbance, or agitation.
4. a cause of mental disquiet, disturbance, or agitation.
5. Astronomy: deviation of a celestial body from a regular orbit about its primary, caused by the presence of one or more other bodies that act upon the celestial body.

Dorito has his own opinions about the word. Here is how he defines perturbation:

1. when your paws get water on them and the only way to remove the moisture is with your wet tongue.
2. when you climb up and up and up in a tree because you see a pretty bird in the top, and then you look down and wonder how soon you will grow wings, because obviously there is no way you will ever reach the ground again.
3. when your Cat Lady doesn't notice the kibbles dish is empty because she is too engrossed in online Scrabble.

Cat Lady No. 62...A Lost Art

Cat Lady Grandma Nancy and her Feline Friend Beauregard often enjoy watching Masterpiece Theater together during quiet evenings at home...also a perfect time for Nancy to catch up on her correspondence.

Nancy and Beauregard believe that the art of letter writing on paper with pen is something of a lost art, and Nancy is doing her best to keep it alive. She takes great pride in her penmanship and even took a calligraphy class so that she could embellish the addresses on the outside of the envelopes.

She plans to enter the Graceful Envelope Contest, sponsored by TheWashington

Cat Lady No. 60...Cat Dance Poetry

Cat Lady Mary and her Feline Friend L.G., aka Bubba, sent in a delightful entry to the 365 Cat Ladies contest for February. Although their names were not drawn for the Grand Prize, I am awarding them the runner-up Big Pat On The Back Award for their entry, presented in verse:

My cat's favorite dance is the Belly Dance and here is the story because who knows the why:

His whiskers are thinnish and measly,
His eyes over-glaze when one calls,
Though long, his tail is quite measly,

And he lacks all grace when he falls.

BUT, dear Kit has one virtue to flog-
While dancing a scandal (bold rascal!)
On his back all who see are agog!

He's a rotating feline theatrical!

And The Winner Is......

Thank you for all of the fun and creative entries in the 365 Cat Ladies contest for February.

Contestants were asked to complete the following statement: My cat's favorite dance is_______and here is why:________.

I originally said that the winner would be chosen based on best choreography, originality, and sparkliest costume--no, wait--we'd just pick the one that made us smile the most.
But they ALL made us smile, so I threw all of the names into a hat and picked one at random. The winner is: Cat Lady Carol Wingert and here is her entry:

My cat Dot's favorite dance we call the "Texas 2 step".

Every night when heading up the stairs for bed, she will stop on the bottom step. I will ferociously pet her until she....walks up 2 steps! We repeat this EVERY TWO STEPS until we get to the top. We've called this the "Texas 2 step" from the beginning!

Besides being an avid Cat Lady and nature lover, Carol is an avid photographer. Here is a fun article that she wrote about her friend Fred The Egyptian Goose featuring some of her photos.

Congratulations!!! Carol will receive this tote bag from my Cafepress Shop.

And be sure to check today's Cat Lady No. 60 for another great entry worthy of your attention.
