Calling all crafty cat ladies and bunny babes! I've recently added a few more fabric craft square/ quilt blocks to my collection including this guy, in both a large and small size:

And...I'm very excited to have received my first snapshots of a work-in-progress by Cat Lady Rosie! Aren't these beautiful?  I love the colors she has chosen!

...and I can't wait to see them all put together into a quilt! Stay tuned... she will be sending more updates.

The animal rescue that Rosie works with is called Charm City Animal Rescue (www.charmcityanimalrescue.com). Currently, she is fostering a gray and white long haired kitty named Avalon..."He is such a diva!!" she says.

Many cat ladies have written to say that they are using the squares to make quilts that they will donate to fundraising raffles or auctions for pet causes.  Isn't that a great idea?  Other ideas for the fabric squares include: appliques, patches,  pockets, a baby or child's quilt, an herbal dream pillow, a cat bed, or a wall hanging.  Any other bright ideas? Share them in the comments section...

If you are working on a project using my fabric squares, please send pics-- I'd love to share your crafty creations!!

Here are the new bunny squares in the 4" size; they will soon be available in the 6" size

Cat Lady Spotlight: Crafty Cat Ladies

What is your favorite thing about Australia?  Here is what readers have mentioned so far: kangaroos, koalas, wombats, Hugh Jackman,  80's band INXS, the Coral reef barrier and the beautiful sea life (add yours to the list here for a chance to win a copy of Australian Homespun Magazine--giveaway ends tonight).

Of course my favorite thing about Australia right now is the May issue of Homespun Magazine and Australian Cat Lady Megan Fisher, who is responsible for my one of my cat lady designs being published as a how-to applique wall hanging project in this month's issue.

Here are some insights into Megan's love for cats, her creative quilting, and her role as Technical Editor at a major needlecraft magazine :

"My husband and I are both cat people from way back. Our preference in recent years has been tuxies. Unfortunately, our once-in-a-lifetime absolutely-the-most-wonderful-pusscat-ever cat died at the age of only 2½ some years ago, and my husband can simply not bear the thought of getting another one, so we’ve been catless for a few years now.

"My husband and I are both introverts, but this cat – formal name Mozart, nickname, Mr Pooh (as in Winnie-the …) – was the most extroverted cat I’ve ever met. All over everyone like a rash. in your face, on your lap, cuddles, hugs, purrs, kisses on and on and on. Getting out of bed every morning was a real drama, because the 'Welcome back from the Land of Nod' from Mr Pooh took at least 15 minutes – as though you’d been gone for months, not hours. We still miss him.

"...He was definitely one of life’s little rays of sunshine and optimism, and when you have a face like his, that can be important." -Cat Lady Megan

"I’ve been making quilts for a bit over 20 years. Prior to that I did a bit of cross-stitch, and I still do some from time to time.

"I prefer making scrappy patchwork quilts, with postage-stamp quilts being a particular joy... One of the things that I like about quiltmaking is that I can make gorgeous work without having a strong artistic bent. It’s just about choosing colours and working with value and patterns – I don’t have to be able to draw!

"I’ve been working as a Technical Editor for Australian Homespun for about 10 years. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that the instructions for the projects published in the magazine are accurate and provide sufficient information for readers to make a project just like the one we show in our photographs. Many designers are highly creative and do absolutely sensational projects for the magazine, but they don’t enjoy what, for them, is the tedium of writing the instructions down in gory detail. So, it’s important that someone who is more analytical, perhaps more detail-orientated, perhaps more of a ‘words person’ than a visual person, reviews the instructions.

"In addition to checking the project instructions, I also write some of the short articles that introduce the projects, the book reviews (what a fabulous job that is!) and the occasional feature article. I enjoy being playful with language and feel that part of my contribution to the magazine has been to inject some light humour and fun.

"Crafting is an important part of the lives of many of our readers and I feel very fortunate to be able to play a part in bringing such wonderful projects to them in the magazine every month. It can feel somewhat relentless – the team is always working on different aspects of four or five different issues at any one time, and, of course, the cycle never ends, so there’s little opportunity to stop, draw breath and relax. Nevertheless, I always make sure that I have time to tackle some quiltmaking of my own. Even though I’ve had a number of projects published, it still gives me a thrill to see my work in print."

Cat Lady Teri is another crafty cat lady whose crafty passion is knitting.  Her custom portrait was one of my paintings that inspired Megan's adaptation for "Knit One, Purr Two".

Teri  started a knitting group on Ravelry.com called the Amazing Flying Squirrel Karma Team. Projects have included an afghan for a grandmother's 100th birthday, making gators (kind of a cowl for men) for the soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, making an afghan to be raffled to raise money for RAINN, and making lapghans and afghans for residents of LANDAHAM State Psychiatric Hospital. "I am very proud of this group and the work we are doing!! Members of Ravelry.com are welcome and encouraged to stop by (http://www.ravelry.com/groups/amazing-flying-squirrel-karma-team) and help with a project or offer moral support. "

She also knows how to sew and "did quite a bit when my kids were small.  I have never done any piecework or quilting though." [note: she and I prefer the idea of having Megan make a 'Knit One, Purr Two" wall hanging for us. LOL].  Teri has another talent, which was evident in the recent "You're a Poet and You Know It Giveaway."
Here are her two lovely entries.  As it turned out, she was one of two lucky entrants whose name was drawn at random to win a mug.

Remembering Gracie

When Cat Lady Sharon first met Gracie she was about 2 weeks old and barely recognizable as a kitten.

"She still looked rather primordial. Her mother was a black
cat with a white chest and Gracie looked like she was going to be a grey cat. Since the family lived 50 miles away I didn't see Gracie again until she was almost 10 weeks old and I went to pick her up. I was shocked to find out that she was Siamese."

"Even as an energetic kitten Gracie never got into trouble around the house. She was always very careful when she explored every nook and cranny. Like most cats, she loved being in high places. I think the most exciting times of her life were the three
times she found a mouse in the house and suddenly became a fierce warrior...

"Gracie had a privileged life--she stayed indoors, had lots of toys, tasty food, very comfortable accommodations, and was well-loved. She loved to follow the sun around the house and watch the goings-on in the neighborhood. When she was 2 or 3 I asked her vet how he thought she would do with another cat in the house and he recommended against it so she was always the queen of the house. She flew across the country a few times visiting family (always in the plane's cabin with me!) but it became clear that she was more comfortable staying at home so friends and/or a professional cat sitter would take care of her whenever I traveled.

"Gracie was a very sweet cat--introverted with others but always very loving with me...Up until 6 months ago she was a very healthy cat but I knew that she was already living beyond the expected lifespan of an indoor cat. She was diagnosed with lymphoma in early September and responded well to medication so she was still able to enjoy her life even though her energy was diminishing. She turned 20 in late March and just after Easter she definitely took a turn for the worse. She was peacefully euthanized on April 10th."

Rest in Peace, Sweet Gracie.

[FOOTNOTES: "Since I knew Gracie's end was coming I thought about what I wanted to do for my feline future and decided that after about a month I would get two cats together...My plan was to wait a month so I could get some work done at home and do a bit of traveling before adding to my household. However after one night without a cat I knew that I couldn't wait a month so that day I went and adopted two 2.5 year old sisters--Daisy and Coco. Both are grey and white. They are both delightful--active and sweet and very fun to watch as they cuddle and lick each other."

QUILT NOTE: "The crazy quilt was a gift from my great aunt who purchased it on Nantucket Island (off the coast of Cape Cod). It was made in the 1860's...the workmanship is meticulous and the variety of fabrics and embroidery is really amazing."]

CAN YOU FIND THE CAT MOTIFS? (click on quilt image, then click with magnifying glass cursor to see detail)...There are several kitties scattered throughout the quilt, plus dogs, birds, butterflies and children!

Cat Lady No. 57...Fun and Games

When Cat Lady Sandy discovered a small and hungry cat on her doorstep, she fell in love and offered the little foundling a warm place to sleep, food, medical care and spaying, and the name Cricket.

According to Sandy, Cricket's favorite pastimes include:

SURPRISE YOUR FRIENDS WITH FURRY GIFTS, PURR-SISTANTLY
"One day I was watching a boring movie on DVD with 2 friends and the door was open a bit so Cricket could go in and out without bothering anyone. Well, she did go out and brought in her find, a little mouse." After guests captured the little gift and put it outside, it was no time at all before Cricket brought in another furry gift, then another, then another...

STEAL THE BACON
The trick is to wait until no one is looking, grab a strip, then run as fast as you can without tripping on it!

LIGHT-STALKING
Flashlights are not just for looking in dark places. They create magical skittering creatures called "beams" that are so much fun to chase when they go around and around in circles.

Sandy and Cricket have a talented niece who makes quilts that are auctioned off and the proceeds to go Breast Cancer Research. Here is a wonderful website that will tell you more: QUILT FOR A CAUSE

Thanks for visiting!
