Cat Lady No. 300...Faithful Feathered Friend

Autumn is in full swing now, which means that Cat Lady Claire and calico pal Trixie have fewer and fewer feathered friends to admire. Only a brave handful have lingered, including this little song sparrow, but most have taken wing to head for warmer climes.

Until they return, Claire will amuse herself with many projects, including making pop-up bird/birdhouse holiday cards, using the step-by-step instructions she found by the pop-up genius Robert Sabuda. Here is the link: Pop-up Birdhouse

Cat Lady No. 298 and Cat Lad 299...A Happy Family

When soon-to-be Cat Lady Teresa and soon-to-be Feline Fella Tony were wed in July of 2005, they started talking about adopting a pair of cats. So, one Saturday in September that year, they visited their local Petsmart for a Fancy Cats (www.fancycats.org) adoption fair. The rest is heart-warming history as recounted by Teresa...

"After looking at all of the kittens, our eyes were locked on a small muted calico kitten named Rita. Everyone in the store kept commenting on how beautiful she was. So, we asked to hold her. It was love at first sight.

"She had two brothers, Reggie, a tabby cat, and Batman, a black cat. We would have to adopt Rita and one of her siblings. But, we could not leave one of the brothers behind. We ended up with all three.

"The woman who had brought in the litter said that there were two more siblings that had already been adopted. Later that year, I went to the rescue website again to see the new cats on the webiste. I found out that their siblings (a calico named Abby and tabby named Riley) had been returned to the rescue.

"I called the woman who we talked to at Petsmart and she said they were available for adoption. So, my husband and I decided that we should try to reunite the family (mostly because we wanted Rita to have a sister). After a few days all five were running around like best friends. They are all very loving and cuddly cats, and their favorite thing in the whole world is turkey. "

Sadly, Rita-- the smallest of the family-- passed away from feline anemia in December of 2007. Although her time on Earth was short, Teresa and Tony are sure that her life's work was very important: ensuring that her beautiful littermates would be united in a loving, happy home.

Cat Lady No. 296...Hummin' In the Rain

If ever Cat Lady Debbie is feeling a bit blue, all she has to do is hug kitten Chompers, get out her brightest umbrella, and hum a little bit of "Singin' In The Rain".

Debbie is not quite bold enough to sing it out loud with joyful glee and wild abandon, like Gene Kelly did. But she has been known to stomp through a splishy-splashy puddle or two and swing around a light pole when no one is looking...

Perhaps one day she will be slightly delirious (as Gene Kelly possibly was--he was coming down with a flu bug and had a high fever when the sequence was filmed) and she will bust out singing:

I'm singing in the rain, Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin', I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds, So dark up above
The sun's in my heart, And I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase, Everyone from the place

Cat Lady Katie in Chicago depends on her bumbershoot this time of year to keep herself and her new kitten Chloe dry. Until today she had always assumed that the word "bumbershoot" was a British expression.

Not so, said her co-worker Alice who hails from London. She said she had never heard the word until she came to the U.S. So they went to the internet and found this helpful, and apparently well-researched, explanation: The Word Bumbershoot

Who knew that it " seems to have been yet another of those gloriously facetious bits of wordplay so characteristic of America in the nineteenth century"...

Cat Lady 294...Raindrops and Kitten

It's raining and Cat Lady Freda and Kitten Clooney are thrilled--Freda because she's been wanting to try out her brand new umbrella, and Clooney because he gets to snuggle up with Freda.

It's also been raining comments on the 365 Cat Ladies October Giveaway post, and Freda and Clooney are amazed at just how many cats have been entering the giveaway by naming their favorite cat shelter or rescue organization...

Kaze, Latte and Chase said: Darn it Skeezix beat us to our favorite rescue- Siamese Cat Rescue in VA. However, we will then put up in the running Rocky Mountain Siamese Rescue because they are awesome too!!

Da Fambly Kitties wrote: We support the Chippewa County Animal Shelter. I am furry proud to say that we are one of only a few county run shelters that are a no-kill shelter that uses foster homes for momma cats and their babies and have 100s of volunteers that walk dogs, groom cats, play with kittens, you name it - they do it.

I was born with Diabetes and Cat-A-Racts - and I now live the life of a spoiled Pirate in Bethel, CT. My cousin Montoya was born blind, and thanks to Mom he now lives a spoiled life in Calgary, Canada. Mom did a fund raiser with Catster Moms and they bought some new kennels for the shelter. She and Aunt Tracey have been helping to do fund raising to get the shelter re-done little by little. They had old wood cages with bugs living underneath, and many rusty ones too. Cat Lady No. 293...A Fabulous Finnish Feline Fanatic

How do you say "Cat Lady" in Finnish? Cat Lady Anne and ginger tabby Picasso will translate for you: "kissaleidi"

Here is a little bit about their life in Finland:

"I grew up in a home with a dog, and my nearest family members have always had dogs. Somehow I ended up with a cat instead, which I feel fits my lazy personality better - no early walks on cold rainy mornings etc...

"Picasso, or Pico as I usually call him, is an elderly gentleman. I picked him up 18 years ago from a farm on the Finnish countryside when I heard there were a bunch of kittens looking for a home. I instantly fell for his ginger charm.

"He is mainly an indoor cat, but he has spent many summers at our family's summer house by a lake where he transforms from a couch loving pillow cat into The Great Hunter who lurks in the grass and clears the surroundings of mice.

"With age also comes illness. A few years ago Pico was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and is now getting medicine twice a day. Fortunately the pills can be mixed into his food, otherwise I would be covered with scratch marks. Now he also suffers from renal insufficiency, which can't be treated. I don't know which of his nine lives he is using right now, but he is still going strong. I know his condition might turn to the worse at any moment, though, so we might not have so much time left together...

"I still have to mention he is almost completely deaf, but there's nothing wrong with his sense of smell - the moment I take out some shrimps or tuna from the fridge the cat is there dancing around my feet.

"When he was younger Pico liked to sleep in the sink, but for the last couple of years he has spent many of his nights sleeping on top of me - which at times can be a bit annoying, but who can say no to a charming creature like him? He also enjoys lying i my lap while I read a good book or watch movies, my greatest hobbies in addition to playing with my Xbox. I'm also interested in photography, and of course Pico is one of my favourite subjects, although he himself isn't too fond of being photographed.

Being a cat mom has been so rewarding, getting all that fluffy love. Of course there are downsides like cat hair all over the place and on your clothes, hair balls on carpets and cat litter under your feet, but rather that than a cat-less home. =) "

In early December Cat Lady Sigrid and feline friend Petronella will be welcoming world leaders to their hometown of Copenhagen, Denmark, to craft a new global treaty on reducing emissions and stemming global warming.

In preparation for that historic meeting, thousands of events will take place tomorrow during the International Day of Climate Action. People in 181 countries are coming together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 4500 events around the world, people are gathering to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis, based on respected science from researchers and scientists around the world.

Cat Lady No. 291...All About Snowflakes

Cat Lady Heidi and feline friend Snowflake think there is nothing prettier than a snowflake, whether it be the frozen or the furry kind.

About the frozen kind: Did you know that some snowflakes can get as big as almost two inches? According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, "Snowflakes are agglomerates of many snow crystals. Most snowflakes are less than one-half inch across. Under certain conditions, usually requiring near-freezing temperatures, light winds, and unstable, convective atmospheric conditions, much larger and irregular flakes close to two inches across in the longest dimension can form. "

About the furry kind: If you are a cat named Snowflake, chances are you spend an inordinate amount of time keeping your fur snowy white--which can often lead to tongue fatigue and hairballs. Snowflake recommends that your cat lady get a cat grooming mitt or glove. Heidi uses one on Snowflake each evening, always resulting in contented purring, not to mention a well-rested tongue.

Cat Lady No. 290...Warm Hearts

It's getting blustery outside, but Cat Lady Katlin and calico cat Katinka have had their hearts warmed by reading all of the entries so far in the 365 Cat Ladies Giveaway for October.

Each entry includes a favorite animal shelter or rescue organization and here are some great examples:

They work very hard to place cats, and to keep cats together when an elderly owner has passed away or can no longer care for them. Cat Lady Eileen and Mr. Maxim always love the first snowfall, which often happens in October when you live in northern Minnesota. It means it's time to find favorite old scarves and hats, or better yet, go shopping for new ones.

Eileen happens to know that the average total snowfall for Duluth in October is 1.6 inches.

Cat Lady Chelsea shows off Cat Mom Princess and her two adorable kittens, all recently adopted from a local shelter. (Don't delay, neuter or spay!)

Cat Lady No. 287...Green Halloween

Inspired by Cat Lady Narissa, Cat Lady Lorna and feline friend Begonia want to make their Halloween green too.

Lorna found some great ideas from the Nature Conservancy...In addition to making costumes for the kids out of recycled items, she plans to buy organic pumpkins, roast the seeds for snacks, put the cooked pulp into spicy muffins, and once their jack-o-lanterns are history, she will compost them.

Treats will be collected in biodegradable paper shopping bags that the kids will decorate themselves. And on the big night, Lorna and Begonia will turn out all of the lights (except the porch light) and await the arrival of ghosts and goblins, appeasing them with earth-friendly treats!

Cat Lady No. 286...Costume Cut-ups

Cat lady Narissa and purring pal Nitomi know that traditional Halloween colors are orange and black, however this year, they are planning on a "green" Halloween.

They will be up-cycling and re-using thrift store and garage sale items for their costumes. They found some really great ideas on The Daily Green website with links to instructions and how-tos.

Narissa is going with the recycled umbrella bat costume as featured at the Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories. Nitomi is going with the crocodile costume , because she loves the idea of having such big teeth!

Cat Lady Endora is enjoying a group hug with Black Cat Mom Esmerelda and her three precious kittens, just adopted from a local shelter! (Don't delay, neuter or spay!)

While at the shelter, Endora learned that today is National Feral Cat Day. Wanting to learn more about feral cats, she found this great article by Peter J. Wolf on the Moderncat.net website: A Feral Cat Primer

Cat Lady No.283...The Most Special Cat

She was The Most Special One. She was a wisp of a cat with fur of midnight black velvet, and mittens of snowy white. Thin and agile and wiry, she fooled all but Cat Lady Susan into thinking she was an oh so young kitten of a girl, right up to the very end.

Melissa Mittens was the feisty type with a sly sense of humor, and loved to play hide and seek, politely taking turns being "It". She also possessed a fiery temper that was often unleashed on unsuspecting veterinary assistants who dared to utter baby talk to what appeared to be a sweet tiny wisp of feline beauty. If blood was to be drawn, it certainly wouldn't be Melissa's.

She was a superb mouser, taking great pride in her work, and would have worn mouse slippers if only she had a pair, or two.

She lived each and every one of her nine lives to the fullest, and sneered in the face of death eight times, including the humiliation of a life-threatening bite in the butt, a tumble in the clothes dryer, and being run over by her very own Catmom (who to this day is horrified and remorseful and grateful for Melissa's miraculous survival and for her forgiveness). By the time Melissa reached the ninth confrontation with death, she was still purring loudly and with great devotion, but ready to say goodbye after 14 years of loyal friendship.

That was a little over a year ago, and Cat Lady Susan would like to thank all of the wonderful Cat Ladies and Lads that she has had the pleasure of meeting over the past year! Sharing their stories about their fabulous felines has been a wonderful gift, and a daily reminder of what a treasure it is to have a special cat in your life! She looks forward to the many more stories to come!

Cat Lady No. 282...Salty Sanctuary

Cat Lady Calandra and her favorite cat fish Salty are delighted that their home near Ecuador has just become a marine reserve. That means that a 135,000-acre area, that has an even wider array of species than the Galapagos Islands, will be protected and preserved.

The world's largest colonies of Black Coral will be protected, as well as a multitude of fish, jellyfish, mollusks and even segmented worms. It will also protect crucial feeding territory for several species of sea turtle, plus humpback, orca, sperm and pilot whales.

Cat Lady No. 280...Thinking Thanks

On January 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament proclaimed:
"A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed...to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October."

Canadian Cat Lady Chloe is thinking thanks. She is making out a gratitude list as she prepares for tomorrow's Thanksgiving Day celebration.

Here's what she has so far:

Cat Lady No. 279...Purrsonal Assistants

Cat Lady Teri learned to knit and crochet as a girl, then got sidetracked for a few decades. She recently took up knitting again and enjoys the company of her purrsonal assistants, past and present.

Current helpers are The Twins LeeLou and Zuzu. They arrived as teeny tiny kittens in a Pop-Tart box on Mothers Day 2006, courtesy of Teri's daughter. They had been found in a culvert after a rain storm and the mama was nowhere to be found.

Teri explains: "For being twin sisters, they couldn't be more different. ZuZu is probably 12 pounds of solid muscle and still afraid of her shadow but can be a sweetie when she is in the mood. She tends to be a watcher more than a lover though. LeeLou is maybe 8 or 9 pounds of pure sugar. Loves to sit in my lap or lay next to me in bed. She is my main knitting assistant."

Teri's angels are Red and CC. "Red was an old cat when he adopted us and ...towards the last month of his life, he suddenly started jumping into our bed - I even woke up one morning with him on my pillow. One night I sat up and was petting him in the bed. [Hubby] Brian asked me what I was doing and I said, 'petting Red' to which he informed me that there was no cat there. I swear, I could see and feel him as clearly as I see this computer screen. When we woke up in the morning he was not around - which wasn't unusual, he came and went on his own schedule. But we never saw him again. Brian and I believe that he went out into the woods and died. I strongly suspect, that it was at 2 or 3 in the morning, when he 'visited' me. I never have had an experience like this before or since."

"CC was the sweetest, smartest cat I ever owned. She liked to play fetch - she would bring us a fuzzy glove that she liked and we would throw it and she would run and get it. She loved to talk to you and I don't believe that she had any idea that we did not understand cat language - she obviously understood us. She did hate to travel though. We drove from Milwaukee to Tallahassee when we moved ... I had gotten her kitty downers ...she was completely stoned, couldn't really open her eyes, but never stopped meowing - for 20 hours. She was hoarse by the time we got here. When CC died at age 16 I was heartbroken..."

Teri has started a knitting group on Ravelry.com called the Amazing Flying Squirrel Karma Team. Current projects include an afghan for a grandmother's 100th birthday, making gators (kind of a cowl for men) for the soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, making an afghan to be raffled to raise money for RAINN, making lapghans and afghans for residents of LANDAHAM State Psychiatric Hospital and making a support blanket for a friend that is going through some rough times. Cat Lady No. 278...DIY CCL

Cat Lady Deborah is a DIY CCL. Feline friend Spinner knows that stands for a Do-It-Yourself Crafty-Cat-Lady.

There simply aren't enough hours in the day to craft all the crafty things that need crafting, so Deborah is grateful for websites like One Pretty Thing. Each day its creator ( Cat Lady Rachel, with the help of pretty kitty Lil' B) will "scour the craft forums, sites and blogs to bring you the best tutorials and DIY projects from across the internet".

This week Deborah can't wait to try the Halloween crafts, especially the free Halloween art to download from the Graphics Fairy. Spinner hopes she will use it to decorate a very special Trick-or-Treat bag filled with catnip (for tricks) and tuna (for treats)!

Cat Lady Vernita is looking forward to Tig-Tom's 14th birthday celebration tomorrow. Tig-Tom has officially joined the geriatric set in the cat world and Vernita hopes that he will continue to live a healthy, happy life for as many years as possible.

Vernita recently learned 10 important things she can do for Tig, including dental check-ups, plenty of water, opportunities for exercise, and a high-quality diet formulated for senior cats.

Cat Lady No. 276...Leaf Crazed

The New England leaves are falling in all their glory, and Cat Lady Juliette can't help but pick up every single one that is more beautiful than the last.

With the help of feline friend Bigelow, Juliette will take the ever-growing collection to the workshop where the leaves will be preserved and can be used in special craft projects during the winter months...

There are 4 different easy ways to preserve these beauties:

1. Use a glycerin and water solution
2. Iron between two pieces of wax paper
3. Drying in the microwave
4. Press between the pages of a heavy book

Cat Lady No. 275...Happy Birthmonth, Libras!

There comes a time in every Cat Lady's life when she becomes too old to get carded, and too young to take advantage of the senior discount at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

That is precisely why Libra Cat Lady Caroline has decided to give up celebrating birthDAYS in favor of celebrating birthMONTHS, with the help of her purrfectly balanced pair of party animals, Bob and Barry.

The month was kicked off with luncheons with various friends, a barbeque, and a day at the spa. Festivities will continue with chocolate cake every Tuesday and the receiving of gifts every day from 3 until 7. Harmony and balance are important to Libras, so the singing of "Happy Birthmonth To You" is entirely optional, unless you have perfect pitch.
