What's Old Is New Again...Finding Buried Treasure

As some of you may already know, I operated a ceramic arts studio for 15-16 years before turning to watercolor painting.

My mainstay during those many years was designing porcelain jewelry. I
hand-crafted each piece from a rolled-out slab of porcelain clay, sometimes creating my own press-molds from plaster so that I could make multiple "blanks" of any particular design.
Once the porcelain pieces were dry, I hand-painted each one with various colorful underglazes, sealed them with a clear glaze, then trimmed each with 22K gold overglaze using a special fine line tool. This process required 3 separate firings in my electric kiln.

Toward the end of my ceramic arts career I created a line of cat lady brooches like those pictured here and sold them in galleries, boutiques and at art festivals. When I drew up these designs for the first time, I had no idea that I'd still be making "Cat Lady" art eight years later, selling it on the internet, and sending it off to exotic and faraway places around the world! Back then I didn't even know what a blog was and Etsy.com was but a gleam in Rob Kalin's eye. I've learned that it's a good thing for an old dog to learn some new tricks!!!

And guess what?

While packing for our recent move, I discovered close to 40 of these pins that have been stashed away since my last move six years ago. I've decided to offer them for sale in my Etsy shop.

Each is one-of-a kind and once they're gone, they're gone!

I am offering them for $22.00 each. They are artist-signed on the back, with a high quality safety-clasp pinback. The brooches measures approx. 2" x 1-1/2". Click on any image for more information, or click here to see the whole collection: Cat Lady Brooches.
Enjoy!

And the Winners Are...

Last week you were asked "How Do You Feel About E-readers Like Kindle?" in a Very Scientific Poll (multiple answers were allowed).

  • No one thought "They are the end of civilization as we know it"
  • 50 % said "Give me a traditional book any day!"
  • 35% said "It's a cool way to carry around a library in your pocket"
  • 25% said "I love anything that encourages people to read"
  • 20% meowed "I don't read books. I'm a cat."
Three names were chosen at random to win a set of 6 personalized bookplates (they get to choose from 12 different designs) and they are:

Pam, who "loves a good book". Be sure to check out her beautiful beadwork at Queenie's Beads, and her lovely ceramics at Country Maid Garden & Gifts

Cat Lady Jennifer, who is "mom" to eight cats and who said, "I vote for the real book any time, hands down! I also, however, voted that I like anything that encourages people to read." You can find out more about her and her many artistic endeavors at JenniferLynn Productions

Wife and husband book review team
Karen and Gerard, who also voted for a real book. They live with cats Spunky Doodle and Manny, and have a book review blog called Grab A Book From Our Stack.

Didn't win? Personalized bookplates in 12 different designs are available in my Etsy Shop at this link: bookplates.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated for your input!

Kindle or No? Make Your Opinion Known

E-book reader gizmos--are they the end of civilization as we know it? Are they the sad demise of libraries, bookstores, and paperbacks? Or are they a fantastic alternative mode of delivering stories and information to the masses? An amazing way to carry around an entire library of reading material in your back pocket? An exciting new way to promote literacy?

Make your opinion known and you'll be eligible for a 365 Cat Ladies and Friends giveaway! Read on for details...

Personally, I could not live in a world without the intoxicating smell of paper that greets me when I walk into a bookstore or a library. It all started in kindergarten, where I was introduced to the mesmerizing scent of Manila paper, which at the time was an organic sort of thing made from a plant called Manila hemp. I loved its smell, its texture, and the welcoming way it soaked up the brilliant colors of my cigar-sized kindergarten crayons. My love affair with paper was only just beginning.

So now, in a bold move to proclaim my confidence in the survival of the paper-based book, I am introducing a new product in my Etsy online shop: Personalized Bookplates featuring art from my Library Cat Series:

The bookplates are 3-1/3" x 4" self-adhesive labels and come in a set of six. Currently there are 12 designs to choose from:

If you have commissioned a custom portrait from me in the past, I can substitute that artwork at no extra charge...Also, if there are any of my other images that you'd like to see on bookplates, I'm happy to give them a try (the artwork must be adaptable to a square format).

And now for the giveaway details!
Make your opinion known by voting in the poll in the right-hand column (you may check as many boxes as you'd like), then let me know you voted in the Comments section of this post. Voting will end on Sunday, Jan. 9, at midnight, at which time I'll select THREE names at random from the comments section to each win a set of personalized bookplates of their choice.

Please make sure that I have a way to contact you in case you are the lucky winner, such as a link to your blog or e-mail address included in your comment.

Also, if you encounter trouble with the Comments feature, please contact me by e-mail --you'll find a link under my Profile.

Scotty's Big Rescue... Part 3

Last week Paddy the Library cat told us a little more about his rescued friend Scotty . Today Paddy tells us a little more about Scotty's special heritage:

Scotty Burns (That’s his fancy name!) is a Scottish Fold cat.

These are special cats with big, round, “owl” eyes. Some of them have ears folded forward and some have straight ears but they all have the traits of the Scottish Fold: mellow and loving with a sweet, wide-eyed expression.

All Scottish Fold cats trace their ancestry back to Susie, a white, folded-ear cat found in 1961 on Mr. Ross’s farm in Scotland. These cats with folded ears must be bred to a straight ear Scottish Fold.Because the folded ear is desirable to more people, a non-reputable breeder will breed two “Folds” together. This can create hardened cartilage and result in a stiff tail and arthritis-like symptoms throughout the body that shorten life and cause constant pain.We have, at our house, another Scottish Fold rescue that suffers from this condition.I will tell you about our Robert Burns [Robbie] sometime!

Scotty and Robbie sense a kinship, and we can often find Scotty sitting or sleeping near Robbie who is getting old and doesn’t feel well [pictured here].

I have been enjoying again some books by Peter Gethers about his Scottish Fold cat, Norton. You might like them too: The Cat Who Went To Paris, A Cat Abroad, and The Cat Who’ll Live Forever. True stories and so much fun to read!

So, that is some of what I’ve been thinking about this summer. Hope you are having some summer fun too!

Paddy's Very Important Job

As the school year comes to a close, Paddy the Library Cat has a very important message about keeping the Library Lady happy:

Hi everybody, I thought it would be nice to tell you about one of my jobs at the library.

I only have to do it once a year, but it's very important. We put up my posters (like the ones below) all around school to remind teachers and students to RETURN YOUR LIBRARY BOOKS!

I've heard from reliable sources that George Washington has had two books overdue for more than 200 years! I hope nobody follows his example, because life goes on just a bit easier if little things like due library books are taken care of in a timely manner. There is a time for everything. Just do it if it needs to be done, and life will remain a little less complicated.

Paddy says:
Keep it simple.
Keep it easy.

Paddy Reviews One Of His Very Favorite Library Books

Hi, It’s me again, Paddy the Library Cat, and I would like to tell you about a most amazing and magical little book.

It’s by T.S. Eliot who lived from 1888-1965. He’s a very famous American and English poet, but don’t let that scare you away from this poetry/story book: Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. The musical CATS comes from this book.

Some of the cats in the “story” are the old, take-it-easy Deuteronomy; Macavity, the criminal; crabby Rum Tum Tugger; and Mr. Mistoffelees, the trickster. I love their names, and my favorite part of the book is about “The Naming of Cats,” which is a very serious endeavor and “not just one of your holiday games.” This is because, according to Mr. Eliot (and ME!), all cats have three names:
  • a usual one [like Paddy],
  • a more descriptive name [mine is Pouf], and…
  • the name that you never will guess; The name that no human research can discover--But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
I think that everybody has a secret name; you do and your friends do, just like your cats. It’s a deep down name that can make you laugh and make you strong and make you confident in YOU! And the best part is that only YOU know it--if you choose to know it. I know mine. Do you know yours?

Paddy says:
Deep down it’s all OK.

Our New Columnist...Paddy the Library Cat

Introducing Paddy The Library Cat, a new columnist here at 365 Cat Ladies and Friends. Paddy was one of the special Library Cats featured in the February 2010 issue of Cat Fancy Magazine..

Hi, I'm Paddy! I was found on a very cold day in winter, abandoned on a rural highway. I was about 4 weeks old and pretty much dead. I had a horrid infection in my eye, and later, when I was 8 years old, I had to have that eye removed (That's OK, though). I am 11 years old now.

I am the Library Cat at Pacelli High School. I live with my Cat Lady Katy (who is the librarian at Pacelli High), her friend Cat Lady Deb, nine other cats and a couple of dogs, birds, fishies, and one rabbit!

I came to the lady's house on Valentine's day, 1999 and have been with her since then. I love people and dogs and cats and just about everything on Earth. I visit the library at least once a month and here are my duties:
  1. To bring a quiet and peaceful presence to the library
  2. To teach a little library history: for example, cats and libraries go way back to the ancient library in Alexandria where they were used to keep rodents away from the scarce and valuable texts.
  3. To be a "library magnet"; ie, attract reluctant learners who previously didn’t come to the library at all.
In the coming weeks, I'll tell you about my favorite books, and lots more. Thanks for visiting, and come back soon!

Paddy says:
Here is my philosophy for having a great library (and a great life too!)

focus
stay peaceful
don't panic

Some Winning Bibliophiles

A big thank you to all of the book-loving Cat Ladies who submitted feedback regarding the ideal length for a ribbon bookmark.

Each name was thrown into a hat and 6 were chosen at random; the winners will each receive a prototype bookmark. The winners are: Mary S., Sheila K., Dawn H., Tammy T. , Linda G., and Tanya G. Congratulations!

[Note: If you
have wee ones about, be sure to visit Cat Lady Tanya's blog High On Craft and her Etsy Shop to enjoy her adorable art and designs for the kiddos. This entire month she is featuring "Boredom Buster" craft project how-tos for kids out on spring break.]

And as a result of your valued input into my market research, I have chosen to use an 11-inch ribbon on each of my new bookmarks--long enough for most hard-bound books, but not an overwhelming length for paperbacks. The first three designs are hot off the sewing machine and available in my Etsy shop (click on image to be whisked away):

Thanks for participating!

I also have lots of gift ideas for book lovers in my Cafepress shop including book bags, mugs, and t-shirts, featuring the cat lady designs you see here. Perfect for your favorite Librarian, Teacher, or Book Club Buddy--they are available at this link (0r click on any picture):
