What's Old Is New Again...Finding Buried Treasure

As some of you may already know, I operated a ceramic arts studio for 15-16 years before turning to watercolor painting.

My mainstay during those many years was designing porcelain jewelry. I
hand-crafted each piece from a rolled-out slab of porcelain clay, sometimes creating my own press-molds from plaster so that I could make multiple "blanks" of any particular design.
Once the porcelain pieces were dry, I hand-painted each one with various colorful underglazes, sealed them with a clear glaze, then trimmed each with 22K gold overglaze using a special fine line tool. This process required 3 separate firings in my electric kiln.

Toward the end of my ceramic arts career I created a line of cat lady brooches like those pictured here and sold them in galleries, boutiques and at art festivals. When I drew up these designs for the first time, I had no idea that I'd still be making "Cat Lady" art eight years later, selling it on the internet, and sending it off to exotic and faraway places around the world! Back then I didn't even know what a blog was and Etsy.com was but a gleam in Rob Kalin's eye. I've learned that it's a good thing for an old dog to learn some new tricks!!!

And guess what?

While packing for our recent move, I discovered close to 40 of these pins that have been stashed away since my last move six years ago. I've decided to offer them for sale in my Etsy shop.

Each is one-of-a kind and once they're gone, they're gone!

I am offering them for $22.00 each. They are artist-signed on the back, with a high quality safety-clasp pinback. The brooches measures approx. 2" x 1-1/2". Click on any image for more information, or click here to see the whole collection: Cat Lady Brooches.
Enjoy!

Furry Friends and Feathered Friends: the Face-Off

Garden Keeper Ana Marie has the bird feeders filled and binoculars dusted off, but she's not quite ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count, which starts tomorrow.
It seems she is also a Cat Lady and has some furry friends who yearn to interact with her feathered friends.

Meet Mario, aspiring jungle beast, who likes to lurk in the potted plant foliage and carefully study any winged wonders that might flutter by...

A beautiful bluebird has caught his eye today; ooooo, just look at that striking red chest! Mario doesn't know what has come over him but he feels compelled to crouch, and his stripey behind wiggles ever-so slightly in excitement...

But Ana Marie is ready. Armed with her garden hose, a gentle shower is directed at Mario's head. In shock and disbelief, he quickly retreats to a sunny spot on the porch to admire the bluebird from afar while meticulously licking that nasty wet stuff from of his beautiful stripes .

Here are some more things that Ana Marie will do to keep her garden birds and her garden cats safely apart:

-Keep cats indoors as much as possible, especially during times when bird activity is high--especially in the mornings and late afternoons when they feed.

-Put collars with jingle bells on the cats.

-Keep bird feeders high (higher than a cat could jump) and buy feeders that prevent spillage on the ground. Do not place feeders near bushes or other hiding places where predators might lurk.

The My Pet Health Guide has more details on how cat-proof your bird feeders at this link: Stop Stalking at the Bird Feeder

Happy Dunking!! Tomorrow is National Doughnut Day

It's time for tea...and Cat Lady Phoebe and the triplets are craving doughnuts, probably because tomorrow is National Doughnut Day! Here is a reprint of last year's article about this auspicious occasion:

Tomorrow is Salvation Army Doughnut Day.

Observed on the first Friday and Saturday of June, Doughnut Day was established in 1938 to honor the work of Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts for thousands of soldiers in World War I.

Here is the original recipe for enough doughnuts to feed an army, reprinted from the Salvation Army website:

Salvation Army Doughboy Doughnut
    7-1/2 cups sugar
    3/4 cup lard
    8 eggs
    3 large cans evaporated milk
    3 large cans water
    18 cups flour
    18 teaspoons baking powder
    7-1/2 teaspoons salt
    8 teaspoons nutmeg

Cream sugar and lard together, beat eggs, add evaporated milk and water. Add liquid to creamed mixture. Mix flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg in large sieve and sift into other mixture. Add enough flour to make e stiff dough. Roll and cut. Five pounds of lard are required to fry the doughnuts. Yield: approximately 250 doughnuts

Happy dunking!

The purrfect mug for dunking doughnuts!

This ceramic mug features my whimsical artwork and a large, easy-grip handle. Treat yourself or give as a gift to someone special.
  • Measures 3.75" tall, 3" diameter
  • Dishwasher and microwave safe

The Name Game

Cat Lady Alice is a special education teacher, and has a big heart and an inborn love for those with special needs. Maggie and Millie are two former stray cats that now share her home, and of the two, Siamese-mix Maggie is definitely the matriarch.

Good friend Flora tell us, ""Alice is always looking out for the stray cats in her condominium complex and has the cat food bills to prove it. Alice has a quick wit, a great sense of humor, and a kind and loving spirit that blesses all who know her."

At least two of the outside cats have names: Bailey and Blue Eyes. I wonder if Alice knows the No.1 Rule of the Stray Cat Code: “if you name ‘em, they’re yours"!

Cat Lady No. 364...A Lucky Girl

Cat Lady Gale has been owned by a cat her entire life. As her sister Cat Lady Flora tells us:

"We both learned to adore animals from our mother, who always made room for them in our lives.

"Sam [Gale's current kitty] is about 14 and her background makes her a lady of mystery. She is obviously a purebred Himalayan. When she was about 5, a friend found her abandoned at her apartment complex. She seemed to have been abused and it took weeks for my friend to get close enough to catch her.

"My mother's cat had just died, so the friend gave her to my mother. Sam spent 4 days hiding under the piano, much to my mother's dismay. On the 5th day, for no apparent reason, she just marched out from under the piano and onto the sofa next to Mom. They were boon companions for 5 years until Mom died suddenly in 2005.

"Gale took Sam, who mourned Mom's death deeply. It took her about a year to realize that Mom wasn't coming back, and then she settled in and has bonded closely with Gale. She is at least 14 and has battled some health issues but is doing okay at this point. Sam is tiny -- only 5 pounds, but the Queen of her Domain and can be a bit sniffy with the help (i.e. Gale) when things aren't done to her satisfaction. She loves to cuddle and sleep in the sun and has a loud purr that is out of proportion with her size."

Cat Lady No. 362...Three is a Charm

Cat Lady Shannon maintains a very balanced household when it comes to pets: three cats share their home with three dogs.

She and her husband Gary are deeply involved with animal rescue. All three kitties - Callie, Pud and Sisko - were rescues. Shannon and Gary frequently foster other animals, so the cats never know who will be showing up for dinner!

Best friend Flora says, "They are truly two of the kindest people I have ever known. Shannon works in public relations, and always jokes that she appreciates animals so much because she has to work with people all the time!"

Cat Lady No. 352...Proper Oral Hygiene

Bathrooms can be a chamber of horrors for some cats (all that running water!), while others find it a wonderland of amusement. Take Gunther and Iris, for example... a brother and sister pair of fearless felines who love to supervise toothbrush time with Cat Lady Camilla.

According to Camilla's daughter Danielle, "Gunther is very lazy dazy and is a little goofy sometimes. Iris loves to sit on Camilla's back while she is bent over the sink brushing her teeth. She also likes to drink the water from the sink when Camilla leaves it running for her."

Good dental care is important for cats too. Here are some tips from Cat World's article on Cat Dental Care:

How to prevent dental problems:
  • Regular visits to your vet, which will include an oral examination.
  • Daily care of your cat's teeth at home.
  • Regularly check your cat's mouth for any signs of dental problems. If you notice any of the symptoms such as drooling, bad breath or red or bleeding gums, seek veterinary attention immediately.
  • Avoid feeding an exclusive diet of canned food.

Cat Lady No. 343...The Perfect Bow

Cat Lady Alicia takes great pride in her bow-making skills. Whether it be a pompom bow, a florist bow, starburst bow, or single-ribbon loop bow, her bows are always picture perfect.

Feline friend Harold takes great pride in his bow-deconstruction skills. Best done in the dark, when the bow-maker is nowhere to be seen, bow deconstruction can take 60 seconds or less using Harold's special technique involving both claws and teeth...

Test your own bow-making skills using the simple instructions for four different bows at this link: Bow How-To. Just be sure not to leave your bows alone in the dark...

Cat Lady No. 342...Wrapping It Up

Cat Lady Shannon is always looking for creative and earth-friendly ways to wrap gifts. Wrap Art by artist John Boak is one of her favorite resources for great ideas using scraps of paper and found objects from around your house.

Newly adopted
cat Aretha cannot resist the lure of paper scraps, ribbons, and an empty box and is always at the ready to help where she can. She considers herself to be the ultimate "found object"!

Cat Lady No. 337...It's All About Hats

Whether it be a bonnet, cap, toque, cloche or hat, Cat Lady Erin loves to dress up in vintage headwear, and has a hat collection to prove it.

Although not a fan of wearing hats herself, Kitty companion Betty enjoys becoming the occasional fashion accessory in a vintage ribbon bow.

Cat Lady No.336...Handmade With Love

Cat Lady Roberta had to get a little creative this year when it came to ideas for gift-giving. She was laid off from her job a few months ago, and money is tight.

Luckily, being the avid knitter, she has a huge stockpile of yarn tucked away for just such an occasion. Tabby Tobias doesn't want to give away any secrets, but yarn leftovers make beautiful hat and scarf sets...

Here is an easy pattern to make a knitted hat courtesy of HJS Studio: Simple Knit Hat

Cat Lady No. 332...A Happy Ending

As Princess Pandora will tell you, it's glorious to be a beautiful white Persian cat, that is, unless you become unwanted and wind up in a shelter. It happens.

Lucky for Pandora, there are many rescue operations that specialize in finding new homes for Persian cats, who require daily grooming and sometimes have special needs. Pandora is enjoying her new home with Cat Lady Debbie, who doesn't mind giving Pandora the extra attention that she needs to stay so glorious and beautiful!

For more information on adopting a Persian cat, visit the Persian and Himalayan Cat Rescue website.

Cat Lady No. 331...Christmas Coral

Mermaid Cat Lady Lorinda and her favorite catfish Jonah have a great gift suggestion: adopt a coral reef in honor of a loved one.

Coral reefs, home to incredible biodiversity, are in danger... According to the Nature Concervancy, "If the present rate of destruction continues, 70% of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed by the year 2050".

The Nature Conservancy's Adopt a Coral Reef program provides critical funds for the permanent protection and restoration of some of the last great places on Earth. Other Nature Lover gift ideas include planting trees and giving carbon offsets. Visit the Nature Conservancy website for more ideas.

Cat Lady No. 329...Getting Jolly

'Tis the season to be quite jolly, and nothing makes Cat Lady Rhonda more jolly than Egg Nog Rum Raisin French Toast. That, and a kitten.

To ensure maximum jolliness for the upcoming season, she just adopted Miss Pickle and Dilly from a local shelter, PLUS she has scheduled three brunches between now and Christmas at which she will serve Egg Nog Rum Raisin French Toast.

Here is a link to the jolly recipe (kitten not included):

Cat Lady No. 328...Don't Crowd Me

Cat Lady Lara and tuxedo cat Tindra both experience enochlophobia, which is the fear of crowds.

That's why Lara has been quite content to pass up all of the mall madness and do her shopping this weekend from the comfort of her armchair. Tindra has been delighted to help out from the vantage point of a very uncrowded lap in a blissful one-cat household.

If you should become disoriented, frightened, or overwhelmed in a crowd, Tindra has a tried-and-true solution: go to your nearest empty box and sit in it awhile. Serenity and inner peace will prevail.

Enjoy!

Cat Lady No. 321...And The Winner Is...

Cat Lady Cameron and tabby Timothy love statistics and are pleased as punch to share these with you: Out of 41 entries in the 365 Cat Ladies Giveaway for November, one name was chosen at random, and the winner is: Cat Lady Jana of Colorado Catnip Toys!

Among her crazy cat lady qualifications: "I have 5 cats, all were orphans. They all help me make catnip toys and kitty quilts I sell on Etsy. At any one given time I will have one cat on my shoulders, one cat laying on the ironing board, one cat sleeping by the sewing machine and sometimes one cat in my lap. Let me tell you, it is not easy sewing with all my helpers. But I would feel lost without them. We all sleep in the same bed. Sometimes that bed gets pretty crowded. I love each of them differently. I have Mr. Tigger, Yakkie, Pokey, Scooter and the baby Zippy. I am a cat person from the word go. They are my kids. I am definitely a CCL!"

Here are some more statistics: In our very scientific poll, the question was posed: How many cats does it take to make you a CRAZY Cat Lady?

The answer "10 or more dearest darlings" was the top choice with 30 percent of the votes. Surprisingly, the second most popular answer was "one cute kitty" with 23 percent of the votes. Thank you to everyone who participated in both the poll and in the giveaway!!
