Go Green Garden Cat Giveaway

With a lot of attention focused on the health of our oceans lately, it's good to remember that what we do right here at home can help keep our oceans healthy. The Nature Conservancy suggests that creating an organic square foot garden can help the environment in numerous ways, including keeping unwanted chemicals out of our seafood!

"Lately there’s been a tremendous surge in interest in eating locally. There are Slow Food groups popping up all over the globe, books about eating food sourced
within 100 milesfarmers markets becoming more common and trendy.

"But what’s better than going to a farmers market and filling your cloth bags with your local farmer’s latest and greatest veggie? Well, how about stepping out on your porch or into your yard and picking some bright, juicy, delicious, home-grown tomatoes or some fragrant basil?...Square foot gardening can be done anywhere you have 6 to 8 hours of sun daily."

For more information, visit their link "Go Chemical-Free with a Square Foot Garden"

A Funny Thing Happened...

Did you ever go shopping and come home with something entirely different than what you set out to find?

It happened to Cat Lady Karen one fateful day...

"My son and I went down to IKEA in New Jersey to purchase some furniture for his dorm room. On the way home we decided to stop at Petco to get some Koi fish. We had just installed a 100-gallon pond and were experimenting with some small fish."

There happened to be a cat adoption event in progress and that's when they made the fateful decision to take a look at the kitties. They saw a darling little black Bombay fellow and, as Karen says, "That was it."

"We left the pet shop with Jet [the new adoptee], food, toys. and snacks. When we returned, my husband and daughter were rolling on the floor with laughter.....Who goes shopping in NJ and comes home with a cat?"

"Jet is a house cat ...I feel very sad that he can not join us, but it is for his health and safety. We have put a gate up on our deck so he can sun himself and be a part of the family when the weather turns nice...When he gets out on the deck he chases the leaves and bugs; it is funny to watch him running around.

"Jet is also under the impression that every plant that I bring home belongs to him. We have a lovely pony tail palm that he can't leave alone. One day we left it out...and by the time we arrived home from work he had chewed every lovely palm frond right down to the trunk of the plant... he was just laying there with a look of satisfaction. He is a great companion, he is a heat-seeker, so he will gladly hog all the covers at night. I wake up at night hanging off the bed...
"

A Couple of Sweethearts

Beagle mix Susie and her pal Sabrena are two lucky pups. Lori tells how these two canine cuties came to live with Lori and Lesley:

"Susie was part of a major rescue from an animal hoarder. We met her by accident when I accompanied a friend to the shelter [The Humane Society of Missouri]. Susie's crate was marked 'special needs' (presumably due to poor socialization) and we just couldn't get her out of our minds. She's been with us since Thanksgiving 2003.

"Sabrena came to our attention thanks to the adoption specialist we met with Susie. She called to say there was this really special little dog who was so scared they couldn't even keep her at the shelter. She'd been rescued from an abusive situation with at least one sibling. We adopted her in July 2004 and have been working with her to ease her fear of most things. She's spent the past year in 'Shy Dog' classes where we've learned that she LOVES to learn new things. It's been wonderful seeing her blossom and been a great bonding experience for all of us."

Susie and Sabrena have been taking their training classes at the same facility they were adopted from. Lori describes the Humane Society of Missouri as " a good bunch of folks doing a really hard job". I think the same could be said for Lori and Lesley, don't you agree?

Cat Lady No. 272...You Are My Sunshine

Kalin Mae was rescued "from the chopping block" when she was 11 months old by Cat Lady Cyndi.

Eternally grateful, Kalin became her new mama's Little Sunshine for the next 18 years.

During that time, Kalin showed an amazing aptitude for math and statistics. In 2003 she helped Feline Fella Rick discover a sequence of numbers (now called the Kalin Sequence: 2,4,2,4,6,2,6,4) that help explain the pattern of the prime numbers. For two consecutive nights, she used her tail-swishing (two flicks; four flicks, etc) to help him solve this age-old math problem that she claimed "was just too easy for my superior cat intelligence."

As for statistics, here are some of Kalin's favorites that she made note of:

• Mama told me that she loved me every single day that I belonged to her: 6544 times
• I snuggled on my Mama’s lap this many times (at least once a day after dinner): 6425 times (discounting her vacation days every year)
• Mama ensured that I would see a long and happy life on earth: 6874 days = 18.82 years
• Mama fed me this many cans of Fancy Feast every night around midnight when I meowed at her to feed me: 6425 times
• Mama emptied my litter box this many times: 12850 times
• Mama gave me a whole lobster on my 10th birthday: 1 time
• Every time my folks went out to dinner each week, I was never let down when I begged for and received special treats: 2754 times

As Kalin's housemate Shabby said "Kalin would have liked for me to relay her thanks to all the Mamas out there who have had the opportunity to know what it is like to care for and love a cat through a long, happy, and sometimes challenging life."

In Loving Memory of Kalin Mae

You will find more of Kalin's fascinating statistics at Kalin's Catster Page!

Cat Lady No. 184...Garden Friendly

Green Thumb Cat Lady Nikki and Garden Cat PeeChee enjoy bees, birds and butterflies, so they are careful to keep their garden safe from pesticides.

According to the ASPCA Guide to Pet-Safe Gardening, "The most dangerous forms of pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with the ingredients disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide and most forms of rat poisons. Always store pesticides in inaccessible areas—and read the manufacturer's label carefully for proper usage and storage."

Better yet, don't use these types of pesticides at all! According to The Organic Gardening Guru: "Less than 1% of the world's insects are considered pests. The other 99% play a pivotal role in our food chain and many are indispensable." He recommends Planet Natural products for earth-friendly pest control.

Thanks for visiting and Happy Pet-Friendly Gardening!

Cat Lady No. 94...Time To Sow

Green Thumb Cat Lady Freeda and feline friend BeeBee enjoy growing sunflowers each summer, then saving the seeds to feed the backyard birds during the winter months.

Now that spring has arrived, it's time to take the last handful of seeds and to start a whole new crop. Freeda knows better than to plant them outside, because the blue jays or the chipmunks will just dig them up.

Instead, she and BeeBee will
put them in some soil in the greenhouse, and plant them outside in a few weeks when the seed has magically transformed itself into a stem and leaves and roots.

Would you like free seeds to grow your own sunflowers and help collect important data about bees? Then join in this fun project sponsored by researchers at San Francisco State University:

The Great Sunflower Project
