What's Old Is New Again...Finding Buried Treasure

As some of you may already know, I operated a ceramic arts studio for 15-16 years before turning to watercolor painting.

My mainstay during those many years was designing porcelain jewelry. I
hand-crafted each piece from a rolled-out slab of porcelain clay, sometimes creating my own press-molds from plaster so that I could make multiple "blanks" of any particular design.
Once the porcelain pieces were dry, I hand-painted each one with various colorful underglazes, sealed them with a clear glaze, then trimmed each with 22K gold overglaze using a special fine line tool. This process required 3 separate firings in my electric kiln.

Toward the end of my ceramic arts career I created a line of cat lady brooches like those pictured here and sold them in galleries, boutiques and at art festivals. When I drew up these designs for the first time, I had no idea that I'd still be making "Cat Lady" art eight years later, selling it on the internet, and sending it off to exotic and faraway places around the world! Back then I didn't even know what a blog was and Etsy.com was but a gleam in Rob Kalin's eye. I've learned that it's a good thing for an old dog to learn some new tricks!!!

And guess what?

While packing for our recent move, I discovered close to 40 of these pins that have been stashed away since my last move six years ago. I've decided to offer them for sale in my Etsy shop.

Each is one-of-a kind and once they're gone, they're gone!

I am offering them for $22.00 each. They are artist-signed on the back, with a high quality safety-clasp pinback. The brooches measures approx. 2" x 1-1/2". Click on any image for more information, or click here to see the whole collection: Cat Lady Brooches.
Enjoy!

Cat Lady No. 348,,,Protecting Hummers

Cat Lady Erica and feline friend Jeronimo know that Great-Aunt Hilda likes nothing better than to watch and feed her "hummers", hummingbirds, that is. So with a few clicks of the mouse, Erica just sent a special gift that will be sure to delight Aunt Hilda: a gift to the Nature Conservancy that will protect hummingbird habitats.

Need a last-minute gift for somebody special? There are many more great nature gifts to choose from and each purchase includes a nature e-card announcing the gift.

Cat Lady No. 325...Leftovers No More

In the wake of today's Thanksgiving food extravaganza, Cat Lady Dania no longer fears the daunting task of using up countless containers of bits and morsels, commonly referred to as leftovers.

She has discovered a wonderful website from the UK called "Love Food Hate Waste", providing handy tips, advice and recipes for leftovers to help everyone waste less food.

The website points out that 8.3 million tonnes (a tonne is about 22o5 lbs) of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year. In 2008 the New York Times pointed out that "Americans waste an astounding amount of food — an estimated 27 percent of the food available for consumption, according to a government study — and it happens at the supermarket, in restaurants and cafeterias and in your very own kitchen. It works out to about a pound of food every day for every American."

Check here for wonderful ideas and recipes for using up your leftovers, plus lots of great ideas about reducing food waste: Love Food Hate Waste Recipes

Cat Lady No.308...Gobble Green Idea No. 4

Cat Lady Belinda and her Siamese sidekick Dora will be entertaining 11 guests on Thanksgiving, and have resolved to make the day as earth-friendly as possible by: Reducing--buying products with the least amount of packaging and choosing biodegradable paper packaging over plastic; Re-using--no paper plates or other throw-aways; and Recycling and Composting everything possible at the end of the day.

For decorations, Belinda plans to make these gorgeous candlelight luminaries as featured on TreeHuggingFamily.com. They are made from recycled tin cans, and Belinda will send one home with each guest.

In the mean time, Dora is hoping to recycle this box into her very own private napping spot, which she will certainly need after helping out with the turkey on Turkey Day!

Enjoy!

Cat Lady No. 254...Maple Madness

Cat Lady Allison and her tabby cat mom Babs and Junior the Kitten think that there's nothing better than a beautiful maple tree, particularly this time of year.

Allison's favorite is the sugar
maple, because she is nuts about real maple syrup. She thought about making her own maple syrup last spring and looked into it: Making Your Own Maple Syrup. Upon reflection, she decided she'd rather just buy it at the local country store.

She did find some delicious recipes that use maple syrup however: Maple Syrup Recipes.

Babs doesn't think much of maple syrup but is of the opinion that maple trees make for some of the best climbing around. Junior doesn't know anything about that. He just loves those fluttering leafy things that keep falling and floating and begging to be pounced on.

Cat Lady No. 253...Fluffy Fur Factories

Cat Lady Diedre is always delighted to see the beginning of fall color, because that means sweater season has arrived and her knitting needles will be flying.

Fur will be flying too. You see, Dierdre enjoys knitting things out of cat fur.

She is particularly excited about the arrival of new Himalayan kitten Buster, who joins fluffy fur factory Theadora. Because that means by next spring, there will be TWICE as much fur to spin and knit!

Cat Lady No. 244...Things That Go Bump

When Cat Lady Lavancha hears something go {{BUMP}} in the night, nine times out of 10 she can blame it on Fang, her jet black feline friend.

Fang amuses himself during bouts of insomnia by testing gravity, to make sure it's still there. Objects are carefully guided to the brink of a precipice, nudged over the edge, and with any luck gravity will kick in and a {{
BUMP}} will ensue. Fang finds his work particularly satisfying, and appreciates how in the morning Lavancha will carefully restore each object to its original location for the next round of testing.

The other 10 percent of the {{
BUMPs}} are unaccounted for, as Fang is always snuggled beside Sally in bed when they happen. Lavancha thinks that the bats in the belfry are to blame, but she'd rather not wake up Fang to go see for sure...heaven forbid he should have another bout of insomnia...

Cat Lady No. 236...Setting Goals

Cat Lady Rebecca --who also happens to be the School Principal--has high hopes for Teacher's Pet Jeremiah, known as "Jerry" to the kids. She just read an article about Oreo the Cat, who earned a High School Diploma online.

She tells Jerry that if he really applied himself and wouldn't spend so much time in front of the sunny window, a diploma could be his, greatly enhancing his job prospects in the future.

Jerry, however, is quite happy with his current duties as Chief Mouser and Seat Warmer. Besides, he has six toes on one paw, and seven on the other paw, making math particularly challenging...

Cat Lady No. 227...Mesmerized by Moonlight

Cat Lady Jordan and her beautiful Maine Coon Tabby Cassiopeia know just how to beat the heat on warm summer nights: spread a blanket out on the grass and enjoy looking at the moon and stars, and the occasional planet.

Stardate Online
is an excellent website that will tell you the phase of the moon on any given night, PLUS where in the sky to look for specific planets.

For example: "Venus, the morning star, is below the Moon at first light on the 17th, and to the upper right of the Moon on the 18th [of August]".

There is also a Sunrise/Sunset Calculator and a Beginner's Guide to Stargazing.

Cat Lady No. 210...Announcing A Trio of Winners

Mermaid Lillithina and her pet cat fish Mergatroid would like to take time out from their fun game of "starfish keepaway" to announce the winners of the 365 Cat Ladies Fun and Games Giveaway for July.

Forty-six cats and/or cat ladies left comments about their favorite cat games and three were pic
ked at random. Here are their entries:

Angus Mhor said: "Angus is a champ at Shanghai from the Shadows-he'll lie in wait, invisible, silent. Then, as you pass by his lair, he'll SPRING! Forepaws aloft, all 14 front toes spread for maximum contact, and GOTCHA! Right on the back of the legs. Then, sit down and listen to the squeals! Rewind and repeat!"

Kitty said: "3 of our cats - Harry, Allie and Murray love to play chase with the Sophie our dog. They run from one end of the house to the other and if Sophie stops, they all just leap over her. She's a Shih Tzu, so they're all about the same size."

And Sal's Girl said
: "My black and white cat--Fast Edie--loves to play Sheet Sharks. She hides under the sheet and we pat her and she chases our hands or we hide our hands under the sheets and she chases them!"

Each has won a "Peaceable Kingdom matted print from my Etsy
shop. Winners, please send me your address and let me know which one you would like-- with or without the caption. Congratulations to all!

Cat Lady No. 201...Lovable Leos

Cat Lady and Professional Coffee Taster Corrine relies on her assistant Kava Kat to make sure the creamer is first rate. Kava has a penchant for the finer things in life and always prefers real cream over anything else.

Kava was born under the astrological sign of Leo (July 23 - Aug. 22), and if there is anything better than being a big, orange cat--it is being a big, orange cat who is a Leo.

According to Catster Astrology,
"The pampered kitty ruling the roost (den?) is surely a Leo. And yet these animals manage to throw their weight around in the cutest way!"

Cat Lady No.197...One Scoop or Two?

Cat Lady Jillian and feline friend Lillian found out today that July is National Ice Cream Month, and better yet, the third Sunday in July, which just so happens to be today, is National Ice Cream Day.

They were designated as such in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, who proclaimed that all people should observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

So Jillian thought it appropriate to buy an ice cream maker in observance of such an important day. The first batch will be strawberry, the second will be more daring--rocky road, her favorite. Lillian, the official spoon and ice cream bowl licker, is wondering when salmon ice cream will be on the menu...Apparently, she might have to travel to Japan to find out...

Cat Lady No. 189...Cats in History

Cat Lady Ingrid loves to cuddle up with her Maine Coon Tabby Mom Teddi and her new kitten Roosevelt.

Ingrid is a history buff and enjoys the fact that pets and animals often figure prominently in art and history through the ages.

Tonight she is reading out loud the charming letters of Theodore Roosevelt written to his children, and one in particular is of special interest:

"D
ARLING QUENTIN: When we shifted camp we came down here and found a funny little wooden shanty, put up by some people who now and then come out here and sleep in it when they fish or shoot. The only living thing around it was a pussy-cat..."

Cat Lady No. 151...Crazy for Coral

Mermaid Cat Lady Coralee and Finny, her Cat Fish, are crazy about the beautiful coral reef they call home.

Did you know that coral is made up of millions of tiny organisms...According to The Blue Project these tiny organisms are the architects of "ancient habitats which have supported diverse sea life for more than 50 million years. And while these living organisms cover less than 1% of the Earth’s surface, they provide habitats for one out of every four of the world’s marine fishes"

"Today, coral reefs face an unprecedented crisis. In the last thirty years alone, more than 10% of these elaborate ecosystems have been destroyed. What’s more, researchers believe another 60% could perish by 2050 due to reef destruction, pollution, overfishing and climate change—all things within our control. Unless more is done to reverse this trend, entire ecosystems could literally collapse."

Gasp! Coralee and Finny need your help. Please support programs like the Blue Project....just click on the link to find out more...

Cat Lady No. 144...Counting Butterflies

Cat Lady Emilia and feline friend Tangerine have found a brand new butterfly to identify.

It's not likely they will run out of new butterflies to discover. Check out these statistics, courtesy of
www.naba.org

"How many kinds of butterflies are there?

"There are approximately 20,000 species of butterflies in the world. About 725 species have occurred in North American north of Mexico, with about 575 of these occurring regularly in the lower 48 states of the United States, and with about 275 species occurring regularly in Canada. Roughly 2000 species are found in Mexico."

Cat Lady No. 138...Spring Cleaning

Cat Lady Dominique and Tuxedo Tom have been best buddies since the day they first shared a tuna sandwich together. Today they are working together on cleaning out the garage.

Dominique is wondering how in the world she ever accumulated so many boxes of junk!

Tuxedo Tom is wondering where his catnip mousie is, and is inspecting every nook and cranny inside each box as it is opened.

Dominique recently visited an interesting website called "The Story of Stuff " and vowed to become a more responsible consumer when it comes to "stuff".

The only thing Tuxedo Tom wants to consume is a tuna sandwich. Is it lunch time yet?

Cat Lady No. 132...Teacher's Pet

Soon-to-graduate college student Alanis is studying for her last final exam with the help of Library Cat Sylvester. Failing the final exam would be unthinkable, as she is looking forward to her graduation ceremony in two weeks, and wearing that striking blue cap and gown that she was just fitted for...

Thank goodness Sylvester is keeping her focused and helping out with an occasional neck and shoulder massage...

Otherwise, her mind might wander to the time she visited the world's largest mortar board, or graduation cap. It's in Columbus Ohio and the aluminum sculpture weighs 5 tons and was suspended in mid-air over Rich Street in 2003 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Franklin University. For directions and a photo, click here:
