Cat Lady No. 209...Kitty Stitches

Cat Lady Julie has recently graduated from the basic knit and purl to some more advanced knitted lace patterns. They require focus, concentration, and an occasional neck massage from her knitting buddy Miss Mirelda.

Two new patterns that Julie can't wait to try are the Cat's Paw/Crown of Glory and the Cat's Eye .

Miss Mirelda can't wait to have a sweater in each...

Cat Lady No. 208...Leftover Balls of Yarn

Cat Lady Nancy just found a new knitting pattern that she can't wait to try out, because she thinks it will be a good way to use up all of the leftover balls of yarn that are stashed away in the closet...

It's a pattern for colorful socks called "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" courtesy of the Yarn Harlot, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, who learned how to knit at the age of 4 and has written several humorous books on the subject of knitting and knitters.

Nancy's feline friend Muppet happens to be an expert on leftover balls of yarn and just looks on in amusement. Muppet knows that no matter how hard Nancy tries to use up leftover balls of yarn, it's an exercise in futility. Because, as any expert knows, they simply multiply in the closet, late at night, and only cats can hear the soft rustling in the darkness...

Cat Lady No. 207...Secrets To A Happy Home

The reason that the home of Cat Lady Clara and Sharkie is such a happy one? Probably the steady supply of choice, home grown catnip from terrific tiger cat Big Poon.

Clara buys directly from Big Poon himself, by visiting Sirius Sunlight Glass Studio in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Every penny from the sale of the catnip is donated to the Iowa County Humane Society. Big Poon has donated nearly $3000 so far.

If you don't happen to be in the neighborhood, you can buy Big Poon's Very Best Fine Home Grown Catnip by mail order.

Your home will be happy that you did.

Cat Lady No. 206...When You're Hot, You're Hot

Cat Lady Sian can't imagine what it must be like to be stuck inside of a fur coat when temperatures soar.

Her feline friends Phoebe and Georgie, however, can tell you that it is miserable.

So when the thermometer hits SCORCHING, Sian follows three simple rules that she learned from The Cat's Meow blog:
Hydrate,
Furminate,
and Educate...

In return, Phoebe and Georgie will happily snuggle up and let Sian enjoy their warm fur coats on those chilly, damp evenings in winter that surely lie ahead...

Cat Lady No. 205...Now Where Did She Go?

Meet Cat Lady Cynthia, professional pet sitter--oh dear, she seems to have stepped out for a moment. You see, this is her busiest time of year, as the height of vacation season is upon us. But never fear, her seven fabulous felines will hold down the fort until she returns.

Front and center is Montana, patriarch of the pride, who recently celebrated his 18th birthday on June 14th. This is how Cynthia describes him:

"He's been with me through 10 moves and 6 new cats. Montana is one of those laid back, dog-like cats that loves to chat with me. He's one of those a 'one-in-a-million' cats that I know I'll never have again. I cherish every day I have with him and hope for many more. He's my Soul Cat."

Montana graciously shares his kingdom with: Grace, Wolfgang Thomas, Poe, Sophie Isabel Moon, Callie Kat, and Countess Ivy Von Macula.

Cat Lady No. 204...Knitting Bugs

Erica has the knitting bug. It begins to set in soon after you have cast on your first row successfully. The bug catches hold when your rows become even, and is fully engaged when you find out how pretty (and easy!) the seed stitch is.

Feline Friend Buster has the yarn bug. Which means whenever the yarn moves, he pretends it's a bug.

Erica often refers to this handy guide when learning a new pattern: Knitting Abbreviations

Happy stitching!

Cat Lady No. 203...Home Sweet Home

Illustration Friday
(theme:"idle" )

We all know what diabolical workshop hands can wind up in should they ever go idle, so when Cat Lady Robbi Jo is not petting Tabby Gabby, she keeps those hands busy with all manner of the needle arts: knitting, embroidery, sewing, cross stitch, quilting, applique, crochet, tatting, and an occasional flirtation with macrame.

Gabby on the other hand, knows she's better off keeping her paws idle. Trouble always seems to be just a claw's-length away...

Cat Lady No. 202... More Garden Games

Winged Cat Zanna enjoys smelling the posies with Garden Fairy Lillilani. One of their favorite games to play is Hide and Seek among the fronds and foliage.

It seems that hide and seek and peek-a-boo are also popular games with mortal cats, based on some of the entries for the July Giveaway:

Cat Lady Angela reports: "Marina's favorite game is hide and seek. She will climb on top of the fridge. I will say boo then hide around a corner. She will try to stretch around to find me. Other times I will say boo then duck down in front of the fridge and she will stretch to find me."

PPB tell us: "Kitty Ollie Popoki likes to "hide" under a table which is covered with a cloth that falls to the floor. The only thing is, as long as her head is under the table, leaving her hind quarters or sometimes just her tail, she thinks she is out of sight. When we call her name, we can see her tail moving, which we believe is her sign of being proud of not being found!"

parrisreddog's entry: "My kitty's favorite game is a combination of hide n seek, and tag. He likes to hide somewhere, and wait for you (or our other cat) to come by and them he jumps out and attacks you! Then he runs! He will do this over and over in different places. Sometimes you expect it, but sometimes he scares you silly! Either way, it's so much fun to watch him having fun!"

Cat Lady No. 201...Lovable Leos

Cat Lady and Professional Coffee Taster Corrine relies on her assistant Kava Kat to make sure the creamer is first rate. Kava has a penchant for the finer things in life and always prefers real cream over anything else.

Kava was born under the astrological sign of Leo (July 23 - Aug. 22), and if there is anything better than being a big, orange cat--it is being a big, orange cat who is a Leo.

According to Catster Astrology,
"The pampered kitty ruling the roost (den?) is surely a Leo. And yet these animals manage to throw their weight around in the cutest way!"

Cat Lady No. 199...Cats Who Swim

Cat Lady Mermaid Nereida and her finny feline Morven enjoy learning about other creatures from distant oceans and lands almost as much as they enjoy swimming around the lagoon.

They've heard tales of an ancient and noble land-cat from a faraway land who also enjoys swimming. It is called by the name "Turkish Van" and mortals often refer to it as "the swimming cat".

Nereida and Mo
rven hope to someday meet a Turkish Van Cat and learn how such a creature can swim with such a long, skinny tail instead of fins!

Cat Lady No.197...One Scoop or Two?

Cat Lady Jillian and feline friend Lillian found out today that July is National Ice Cream Month, and better yet, the third Sunday in July, which just so happens to be today, is National Ice Cream Day.

They were designated as such in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, who proclaimed that all people should observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

So Jillian thought it appropriate to buy an ice cream maker in observance of such an important day. The first batch will be strawberry, the second will be more daring--rocky road, her favorite. Lillian, the official spoon and ice cream bowl licker, is wondering when salmon ice cream will be on the menu...Apparently, she might have to travel to Japan to find out...

Cat Lady No. 196...Mischief Makers

Cat Lady and veterinarian-in-training Jolinda studies a textbook on exotic cat psychology while Norbu, her Himalayan book buddy, dreams of mischief.

Apparently mischievous cats such as Norbu enjoy boasting first-hand about their pranks...It turns out that many felines have sent in their own entries for the 365 Cat Ladies Giveaway. Here are some startling examples ...

Skeezix The Cat [who happens to have his own blog Skeezix's Scratching Post and his own Etsy shop: The Feline Fashionista]: My faverite game is to have Mr Tasty Face play the string with me. He drags it underneeth this little Perzhun carpet in the living room, and win I see it I do a slide-n-dive under the rug to git it, kinda like a baseball player sliding into home. Then I wate under the rug fur my big bruther Mao to come by and then I pownse on him!!!!

DaisyMae Maus [who ALSO has her own blog DaisyMae Maus & The Feline Americans]: Charmee loves to play a game with Mom called "Taco Press" where Charmee vaults from the countertop to the refrigerator top to the catwalk above the kitchen cabinets an' Mom climbs up onto the countertop with the taco press (those tong-things that you use to fry crunchy taco shells) an' tries to squish (gently, of course) Charmee's tail an' paws. He LOVES this game an' gets totally 'xcited when Mom is lurking near the counters ... hee, hee.

The beautiful pride of cats known as 8GR8TCATS report: Our favorite game is called Cat Food Hockey! We PURRtend we are the Buffalo Sabres! Our PURRson Carm shoots one of our kibbles at us. Candy is the goalie and if she makes the save she eats the kibble-puck. If one of the other cats intercepts it- we eat it! If our PURRson gets it past all of us- we give her hugs and kisses after the game! [Their Purrson Crazy Cat Lady Carm oversees the blog in this family...]

Cat Lady No. 196...Cat Hijinks

Canines are not the only pets who are loyal and like to play fetch!

After reading the entries in the July Giveaway, Cat Lady Maureen is amused to discover that Mistique is not alone in the cat world when it comes to steadfast love and the joy of retrieving:

Cat Lady Angela tells us: "Tosca's favorite game is fetch. She will fetch for up to an hour when motivated. Pipe cleaners are her favorite toy. If she isn't playing fetch with them, she is bathing them in her water dish."

Macaroni's Mom reports: "My 12-yr old tuxedo cat, Macaroni loves to play fetch. He will go find one of his pipe cleaners and bring it to me. I will throw it and he will jump in mid-air and catch the pipe cleaner and return it to me. This can go one for minutes. If I don't immediately throw the pipe cleaner, then he jumps in my lap and drops the pipe cleaner."

Cat Lady Lyz says: "My 4-yr-old, Marley, loves to play fetch with various small toys easy for him to pick up and carry, like stuffed mice. He gets especially excited if the toys is thrown in a direction in which he must leap over furniture or slide to a stop on a rug in order to capture and retrieve it."

Cat Lady No. 194...Kitty Capers

Cat Fish Xanadu's favorite game is to pretend he is a sea serpent and to chase Cat Lady Mermaid Esmerima through the kelp forest and try to nip her tail fin.

Apparently, toe-nipping is a favorite pastime for mortal Cats and Cat Ladies and Lads, if the July Giveaway entries received so far are any indication.

Cat Lady Laura reports:
My youngest kitty, Newman, loves to play a foot game with his Daddy. He hides inside his favorite S-shaped lounger, and when Daddy comes out of the bathroom, Newman tries to grab his feet as he goes by. He only plays it with Daddy!

Cat Lady Rita Anne reports:
Far TOO many of our babies like the "Toe Attack Game". This game is best played when Mommy or Daddy are not quite awake in the early morning. The kitties wait for that moment when the human foot slides so temptingly under the sheets/covers. Those toes MUST be stopped! The plan of attack is there is none! Just GRAB that toe or toes with claws out, dig in, holding on for dear life and then BITE the big toe with every ounce of strength a kitty has! This is a REALLY fun game, but tragically doesn't last too long as human skin is way too thin and starts to bleed through the sheets. Bummer!

Every year the Cat Lady finds candles in the strangest places, such as under the refrigerator and in the sliding glass door track. Licorice will sit patiently next to the tree waiting for the Cat Lady to put the candles back on the branches so he can--what else-- pull them off all over again!

Cat Lady No.190...Cat Nostalgia

Cat Lady Carol Mai has a thing for nostalgia and sometimes reminisces about one of the first kittens she ever enjoyed--a little whirling dervish of white fur, whiskers, and mischief.

She came up with his name, Brat Cat, and he grew into a gentle giant who occasionally reverted to his kittenish ways with a spurt of catnip-induced tomfoolery.

Nowadays Carol enjoys nostalgia by collecting, restoring, and selling vintage clothing and treasures galore in her new Etsy shop:

Cat Lady No. 189...Cats in History

Cat Lady Ingrid loves to cuddle up with her Maine Coon Tabby Mom Teddi and her new kitten Roosevelt.

Ingrid is a history buff and enjoys the fact that pets and animals often figure prominently in art and history through the ages.

Tonight she is reading out loud the charming letters of Theodore Roosevelt written to his children, and one in particular is of special interest:

"D
ARLING QUENTIN: When we shifted camp we came down here and found a funny little wooden shanty, put up by some people who now and then come out here and sleep in it when they fish or shoot. The only living thing around it was a pussy-cat..."

Cat Lady No. 188...Sink or Swim

Cat Lady Dierdre always knows where to look for Tuxedo Tilda when it's nap time...the kitchen sink.

On the off chance that there are dishes soaking there, the secondary choice for napping would be the upstairs bathroom sink.

Apparently Tilda is not alone in her preferred spot for curling up...There is a website devoted to documentation of this phenomenon called--you guessed it--Cats in Sinks.

When you all smiles after clicking through the photos, you may upload photos of your own darling being adorable in the sink of your choice...

Cat Lady No. 186 and Cat Lad No. 187...Jungle Cats

Jungle cats Morrison, Inara, and baby Juno took time out from their "big game" hunt for this family portrait with Cat Lady Emily and her Feline Fella.

It turns out that the felines' "big game" is to hunt down any renegade catnip mouse that has the misfortune to make an appearance in the household and give it a good thrashing.

As Emily puts it: "They love those bright colored real-fur mice you get in packs and they fling them into the air to then catch and chase. It's hilarious! I constantly have to buy more because they destroy them from playing so hard."

Happy hunting, you fearless felines!

Cat Lady No. 185...Give Peas A Chance

Cat Lady Judith never liked to eat peas much, until she started growing her own. Today Garden Cat Theodora is going to help Judith build a trellis for the peas vines, which are suddenly taking off and growing like crazy.

Judith prefers building simple trellises out of bamboo poles and twine. Theodora prefers twine that can be mistaken for a mouse tail and needs a good pouncing...

Here are some simple directions for a bamboo trellis that can be used in a container or in a garden: Building a Bamboo Trellis

Cat Lady No. 184...Garden Friendly

Green Thumb Cat Lady Nikki and Garden Cat PeeChee enjoy bees, birds and butterflies, so they are careful to keep their garden safe from pesticides.

According to the ASPCA Guide to Pet-Safe Gardening, "The most dangerous forms of pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with the ingredients disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide and most forms of rat poisons. Always store pesticides in inaccessible areas—and read the manufacturer's label carefully for proper usage and storage."

Better yet, don't use these types of pesticides at all! According to The Organic Gardening Guru: "Less than 1% of the world's insects are considered pests. The other 99% play a pivotal role in our food chain and many are indispensable." He recommends Planet Natural products for earth-friendly pest control.

Thanks for visiting and Happy Pet-Friendly Gardening!

Cat Lady No. 183...A Royal Birthday Gala

Cat Ladies have the nicest sisters, who wish them a Happy Birthday in the nicest ways. One such sister is Felicia, who reports:

"This Fourth of July, Cat Lady Vanessa will be celebrating her 36th birthday basking in the glow of her adoring cats Tessa and Claudia. The girls are planning a brunch followed by a magnificent cake and presents.

"A regal, self-confident kitty, Tessa secretly believes the parade and fireworks are actually in her honor. Regrettably, the kitties won't be able to attend the fireworks display, as they are indoor cats and must stay home and wait impatiently for their queen's return.

"This is all fine and well for Claudia, who is upset by loud noises and will be quite content huddled in one of her secret hiding places."

Be sure to visit sister Felicia's wonderful Etsy shop: Catwalk Paperworks for fun and nostalgic collage art, gifts, and greeting cards!

Cat Lady No. 181...Rules about Feathered Friends

Cat Lady Robin and her Feline Friend Caspar are devoted bird watchers with a strict rule: LOOK BUT DON'T TASTE.

Casper understands that licking one's chops, and uttering silent meows in rapid succession are tolerated, but eating feathered friends is strictly prohibited.

A personal favorite of Robin and Caspar is the American Goldfinch. Robin thinks that there is nothing sweeter than a goldfinch's warbling. Caspar imagines that there is nothing sweeter than a goldfinch pie, but knows he will never find out for sure.

If you don't happen to have a flock of goldfinches in your own back yard, you can still listen to their sweet warbling at this wonderful website that has recorded dozens of bird songs: American Goldfinch Song and Sounds.
