Forget about that quest for eternal happiness as you search high and low for the perfect pair of shoes. It's not about the shoes.  It's all about the SHOE BOX! I've searched high and low and behold: I've found the perfect fit...

Just the right size
AND the perfect color too.
Welcome to my little slice of heaven.

Today was a very big shipping day.

Don't know what I would have done without my Junior Shipping Clerk, Inka.

The Inka Flourish

You've heard of Vanna White?

Meet Inka Black.

She's been practicing her product enhancement flourish with the latest batch of Snazzy Rat Catnip Toys, appearing soon at our local Yamhill Lavender Festival.

She's been told not to touch the merchandise,
 but sometimes she forgets...

She has chosen to draw your attention to the "Peace 'Nip" model which she hopes you will find particularly fetching.

Inka hopes you will tune in daily to our Etsy shop where you will find these and many more fine products.

Better yet, if you are in the area, drop by and visit us at the Lavender Festival. Just mention Inka and you'll receive 15% off your entire purchase from my booth! The Yamhill Lavender Festival takes place this weekend, July 13 and 14 in the quaint village town of Yamhill, Oregon. I will be there both days selling lavender sachets, Snazzy Rat catnip toys, and jewelry.

Can't make it to the show?  Don't despair.  Just use the coupon code LAVENDERLOVE  in my Etsy shop and get the same 15% discount on your entire purchase from the shop.  Offer good through Sunday night, July 14th.

[Cue big finale flourish from Inka.
She's going to use BOTH paws...]

Relaxation ala Inka

After many months of carefully studying Buttonwillow's relaxation techniques, it appears that Inka has finally perfected her own style.

Hope your holiday is as relaxed as hers is going to be!

How To Get Your Tail In a Twist (In A Good Way)

As the pledges continue to climb in my Kickstarter "Oh Rats!" campaign, we have already started working on production of the first large batch of Snazzy Rat catnip toys, plus other aspects of fulfilling rewards for my Beloved Backers.  Here are some project pre-production notes:

TAIL TWISTING
As requested by Inka, each rat must have a squiggly, wiggly tail in snazzy colors.

To accomplish that, I start by wrapping the yarn around a board that is just the right width, then I cut the yarn at both ends.

For each tail I use two strands of yarn in different colors.

Then I tie two strands together and twist the whole length multiple times.

When I bring the two loose ends together, the pieces "re-wind" around each other into a pretty twist, and I secure it with a knot.

Okay, one down, about 200 more to go. :-)

There, now that's better.  With help from the very patient man who lives here, we'll have our tails in a twist in no time!
If you'd like to learn how to  make your own twisted cord for a project, just Google "twisted cord tutorial" and lots of great how-to's will pop up.

LAMINATION ELATION
I'm not a big fan of plastics, so I don't know what it is about sending a piece of paper through a lamination machine, and having it come out the other end perfectly preserved and impervious to the elements, but I confess-- I LOVE it! In an unselfish act of motherly love, I decided to let my son and studio assistant Christopher share in the joy.  He spent last weekend making up the first batch of generic I.D cards for the project.

A COUPLE OF CUT-UPS
As many of my long-time readers know, Buttonwillow has an intense fascination with scissors and continues to try to master the art of using them.

When I ordered the fabric to make my Snazzy Rat prototypes, I made sure I had enough to make about 10 of each to give me a little head start on the project.

So Buttonwillow and I put our scissors to work and cranked out these puppies in no time at all.

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED
Time to put my sewing machine to work.  I love listening to TED talks and to Jango radio on my computer when I sew.  Just look at this happy pile o' grinning rats!

Turning these babies inside-out and stuffing them are two more fun tasks that I am sharing with Chris, and he's doing a great job!
Funny story about the catnip. I've been making different catnip toys for several years now and I store these bags of 'nip in our garage where it is dark and coolWe moved into our new house about 18 months ago and soon had our first garage sale-- in the garage-- and met many of our new neighbors.  About halfway through the sale, I noticed that my four large polybags of dried green herbs were prominently lined up on a back shelf in full view.  I wonder just what might have been going through the minds of those neighbors, but no one had said a word.  Just to be safe, during the rest of the sale I hid the bags inside the house, lest there be any confusion about just what kind of herbs were in those bags....

Next pre-production task: Packaging. I'll show you what I've come up with in the next post.

Thanks again for all of your support and enthusiasm as this project progresses!  There is still time to procure your own Snazzy Rats by making a pledge at this link.  The campaign ends Tuesday, April 23.

Buttonwillow Wishes to Thank The Academy...

Last night was the exciting launch of my Kickstarter catnip toy project, which featured the premiere of our "Oh Rats!" video starring Buttonwillow and her sidekick Inka.

And in response to your response we would like to say...

Wow Wow Wow!

You guys are the SNAZZIEST! Thanks to some really fantastic feline fanatics, we reached our initial Kickstarter funding goal in the first 5 hours of the campaign. I can't believe it and my head is still spinning. Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart!

But this campaign isn't over yet.  Additional pledges = seed money for additional Snazzy Rat designs!

Pledging will continue for another 20 days, so it's time to introduce some incentives to keep the ball rolling!  In Kickstarter Land they are called "stretch goals."

Sooo, here's the deal: Every time the pledge total goes up another $300, I will design one brand new Snazzy Rat design for backers to choose from, up to 6 new designs (in addition to the original four).  Click here for details: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/susanfaye/oh-rats-snazzy-artisanal-catnip-toys-to-drive-your/pos...

Please help me reach these "stretch goals" by sharing my Kickstarter link with all of your cat-lovin' friends and family: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/susanfaye/oh-rats-snazzy-artisanal-catnip-toys-to-drive-your

As you can imagine, I am jumping for joy and truly appreciate your support of my creative endeavors! Thanks everybody!

What's Cookin' Part 3-- Snazzy Rat Prototypes!

They're here!

I have finished the four prototypes of my new "Snazzy Rat" catnip toys.  I used cotton denim for the backs and upcycled yarn for the tails. Then I filled them with organic catnip.

Here they are with their snazzy names:

HAPPY DAZE

They are about 6" long (not counting the tail) and 2-1/2" high. They are filled with 1/4 cup  of organic catnip and a small amount of fiberfill, and made to be durable.  Tail colors may vary (but will always be snazzy).

...Buttonwillow and Inka agree that the new and improved catnip toys pass muster and are ready to be introduced to their feline friends around the world!

This is where YOU come in.

In order to offer my Snazzy Rats catnip toys at an affordable price, I need to buy my materials in bulk in order to get wholesale prices.  So.... to raise the seed money necessary to print large runs of fabric and to purchase all of the other necessary materials in large quantities at wholesale prices, I have created a Kickstarter campaign which will launch on Tuesday, April 2.

Not familiar with Kickstarter?  It's a fantastic website for creative people that enables them to raise funds for their creative projects. You can learn more here:

You can help me on Tuesday by
  1. Making a pledge (essentially, you will be pre-ordering Snazzy Rats catnip toys), and...
  2. Spreading the word on Tuesday by sharing my Kickstarter project with all of your favorite crazy cat ladies and cat guys through Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc...
Thank you from me and the gang here at
World Headquarters!

What's Cookin' -- Part 2

Last week I shared the black and white drawings for my new cat toys.

artwork copyright 2013 Susan Faye. May not be reproduced without permission. Thanks!

The next step was my favorite part:
 COLOR

Buttonwillow and Inka requested SNAZZY colors, so here is what I came up with:

How am I doing so far?" I asked my studio assistants.

"Not bad," said Buttonwillow.
"Snazzy!" said Inka.  "Pssst- does anyone know what snazzy means?"

I sent the artwork to Spoonflower.com where they professionally printed my designs on one yard of durable cotton twill canvas, and here is what came back in the mail:

The anticipation is rising around here and so is the intoxicating scent of catnip as I take the bin of organic 'nip out of the closet and sit at my sewing machine.

Next:  The prototypes!

Inka, In Good Standing

We know nothing about the origins of our little foundling Inka, however we are fairly certain that she is part bunny rabbit.

She often sits on her haunches just like this when she needs to get a better view of something.

Of course, sometimes, even the bunny thing doesn't provide adequate elevation to see what one needs to see...

...in which case one simply resorts to the humanoid bi-ped thing:

We just LOVE this little creature from another planet; don't you?
