Yep, it's time once again to dust off those binoculars and prime the backyard bird feeders with seed and suet in preparation for the Great Backyard Bird Count, which asks bird watchers in the United States and Canada to count birds in their own backyards and communities over the weekend of February 17-20.
Now that we have a brand new back yard, I'd better get to work! I'll be putting out a bird feeder or two today to see who shows up. So far I've mostly seen crows, seagulls, and starlings in the big field across the street. I'm hoping the feeders will attract a few more feathered friends including chickadees, towhees, juncos, and nuthatches... I don't expect to see the variety that I did out in the Coastal Hills, but it will be interesting to see who the "city birds" are.
