One of my favorite teachers was my 4th grade geography teacher. I hated the subject, but she made class fun: she would take breaks from geography and read ballads to us. She was young and energetic, and would play jumprope with us at recess. To this day I can recite "the Hiwayman", remembering this teacher's animated voice: "and the hiwayman came riding, riding, riding...."
When I was in high school, I was pretty smart, but Chemistry was just giving me the worst time. I pretty much threw in the towel, and my teacher knew it. Mrs. Arth pulled me aside after class one day and told me she knew I could get it. With her help and encouragement, I DID get it. Not only that, but it became FUN. I've often wished I could find her to let her know how much I appreciated her interest and encouragement. - Sarah Hunt (kirbylu@aol.com)
I used to have a Farsi teacher in high school, who loved to take away my notebooks. I was always doodling or drawing and she was a pretty good sport about it.
Recently at a reunion I learned that she had inquired about the girl who was always drawing in her class by name no less! Wau
I think she was my first fan! :)
My most memorable teacher was my high school German teacher in 10th grade. She had started her career as a social studies teacher, but her husband was career Army, so she ended up in Germany and eventually became a German teacher. She encouraged me to apply for an exchange student scholarship -- and I spent my high school junior year in Germany as a result! This inspired a love of languages and travel.
It also ties in to Cat Lady 141 / Cassie -- because it was in Germany that one of my teachers there got me into reading science fiction, which really changed my life!
My most memorable teacher would be my fifth grade teacher Mrs. Linn, whom I am still in contact with 30 years later. She was full of energy and fun, yet also strict and structured. I got in trouble with her and was often made to stand behind the chalkboard (the equivalent of standing in the corner), and yet I was "teacher's pet" and even invited to stay at her house one weekend. She introduced me to poetry, and she used to buy a gift for the student of the week (I was often the winner, and still have a couple of the gifts!)
My favorite elementary teacher was Mrs. Cotney, my fifth grade teacher. She read aloud to us everyday. She is the reason I became a 5th grade teacher who read to her students everyday.
